That ship fulfilled criteria of ironclad given by naval historian J. Richard Hill: simultanously having 1) a metal-skinned hull, 2) steam propulsion (paddle-wheel or screw propulsion) and 3) a main armament of guns capable of firing explosive shells (aka Paixhans gun).
