Captain or Captain[edit]

Both Gin Tōdō and Chiaki Mukai are referred to as 'captain' in English. This doesn't make much sense to me in a practical sense at it would just open the door to confusion — both to the reader and for the characters in the show.

In kanji, their titles are 船長 for the ship's captain, and 隊長 for the expedition commander, so the intent is there to consider their positions differently.

As per JMDict, 船長 translates as ship's captain and transliterates as 'senchou', and has a naval/maritime bent. The same site provides that 隊長 translates as commander or captain, and transliterates as 'taichou', but is used more in a military or team sense.

FWIW, if you look at the Ernest Shackleton page, it never refers to him as captain, and it reserves that term for people with the formal title or those who actually captain a ship. Indeed, in the Personnel of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition page, it provides 'Commander' as his position.

I think it would improve the article if Tōdō was referred to as expedition commander in her description (and perhaps Maekawa as expedition vice-commander). Perhaps phrased this way: "Leader of the private observation team, Antarctica Challenge and commander of the expedition." Note, I think that if the expedition itself was given a name (i.e. to distinguish it from the one made three years earlier) then that should be included above. The team and the expedition are two separate things, one permanent, the other not. If the show actually provides formal names for things, those could be incorporated. ogenstein (talk) 10:28, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

English dub treatment[edit]

When will "A Place Further than the Universe" be dubbed in English? 104.3.132.111 (talk) 20:10, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
