gallery[edit]

I put the painting images in a Gallery. Seems neater to me. To see larger images, just click on the image. I'm open to suggestion. JJ 20:13, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

External links[edit]

I have again removed the external links section, as all entries appear to contravene the guideline WP:EL. In particular, the links to commercial galleries are inappropriate and will be removed on sight. Wikipedia is not a marketing tool. I seem to remember from the first round of deletion that one or two non-commercial links were borderline. If someone disagrees, make a case for them here. Studerby 14:52, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I added back the link to WhiteMountainArt. My site is educational and non-commercial as you will note from the Home Page. I have maintained the site for seven years without ever allowing a single commercial link. This article, which is a biography of Bierstadt, is enhanced by the reader having access to images of paintings that Bierstadt executed in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I suggest that you take a close look at my site to understand its scope and purpose. That having been said, the Hollis Taggart Gallery is a commercial gallery that sells art. Further, the link is to a biography which does not contribute further to the nature of the article. The MONA link is to a museum to discuss a single painting. There are Bierstadt paintings in dozens of museums in just this country alone, and this link seems inappropriate. I have not removed these last two links, but they do seem candidates for deletion. I welcome a discussion from you and others. JJ 13:23, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is disturbing that I tried to create a discussion on the use of external links. Both anonymous sources and Alp1776 have made edits adding and removing links without any regard to this discussion. I will revert these edits until someone tries to resolve this issue by a reasonable discussion. JJ 00:08, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry it took me so long to respond (over a month). I have been away/busy. Anyways, those links look fine to me. I cannot see any reason to remove them (I haven't read WP:EL in ages, but who really cares about the fine print). It seems the debate has ended and no further discussion is needed. Existing Work[edit]

The Wikipedia article on Mount Washington (New Hampshire) contains a section listing artwork using Mt. Washington as subject matter. One such painting is Autumn in the Conway Mountains Looking Towards Mount Washington, an oil on canvas. While it makes sense to include it in the "Existing Work" section, I did *not* do so for I do not know its location (I assume it is still extant). I followed the link to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, but they did not list it in their collection. --Dan Aquinas (talk) 19:07, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Todo: This section should be updated to list individually those Bierstadt paintings in Boston's Museum of Fine Art's collection instead of stating "several pieces" as is now the case. --Dan Aquinas (talk) 19:07, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It would be helpful (I think) to state that the list of items in the "Existing Work" section appear chronologically. This seems to be the case towards the end of the list, but at first it is hard to tell because not all entries at the beginning of the list have a date. Would this be a worthwhile update? --Dan Aquinas (talk) 19:07, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Albert Bierstadt. Please take a moment to review my edit. You may add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it, if I keep adding bad data, but formatting bugs should be reported instead. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether, but should be used as a last resort. I made the following changes:

suggested addition to the biography[edit]

The German wikipedia article states that Bierstadt travelled to Düsseldorf in 1853 in order to study with Johann Peter Hasenclever, who was not only a successful German painter at the time, but also a cousin of Bierstadt's mother. Hasenclever died shortly before Bierstadt's arrival, but with the help of Hasenclever's friends and colleagues Bierstadt was able to stay and study in Düsseldorf for several years.

I suggest that these circumstances are added to the article. Most American artists at the time travelled to Europe for studies; but these specific family connections shed a light on the reason why Bierstadt ended up in Düsseldorf of all places, and not in Rome or Paris. Among the Sierra Nevada, California: a painting by Albert Bierstat

Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902) was a German-American painter best known for his lavish, sweeping landscapes of the American West, such as this oil-on-canvas painting, entitled Among the Sierra Nevada, California, created in 1868. He painted the landscape in his Rome studio, and exhibited it in Berlin and London before shipping it to the United States. His choice of grandiose subjects was matched by his entrepreneurial flair; his exhibitions of individual works were accompanied by promotion, ticket sales, and, in the words of one critic, a "vast machinery of advertisement and puffery". This work is in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
