Does Anahuac refer to Mesoamerica or North America? The Mexica Movement (according to the wiki article) uses Anahuac to describe North America, hence the reason why they want to use it to describe a future North American state run by the indigenous people of America. Per original usage recorded in conquest-era documents, "Anahuac" does not really refer specifically to one given locality or territory. In Classical Nahuatl, ānāhuac is a general locative meaning "close to water", and I think could be applied to just about any place fitting the description. "Coastal" or "littoral" would be reasonable equivalents in english. For example, ānāhuac xicalanco referred to the tropical Gulf coast region of Mexico, and ānāhuac āyōtlān to the Pacific coast. The Florentine Codex makes mention of the Mexica/Aztec 'heartland' portion of the valley of Mexico also being referred to as Anahuac (ie, specifically the shores of Lake Texcoco). It could also be used generically and by extension to refer to the territories of the Aztec Triple Alliance, especially the low-lying coastal lands the highland-centric Mexica traded with or exacted tribute from. Or even, metaphorically it could refer to the extent of the world known to the Aztecs (cemanahuac, "the world").
Whatever the contemporary Mexica movement wish to extend it to, probably bears little relation to the (varied) ways the term was used in the 16th C. --cjllwʘTALK10:04, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Maunus, I agree that redirecting this page to Valley of Mexico was not the best thing to do, since historical and original usages of Anahuac are not only as a synonym for the valley; there are quite a few other alternative and valid uses of the term in Mesoam. literature that this article should be going in to.
