Arbor Day[edit]

I would like to see this page explaining the reason this day is called "Arbor" day, from Latin Arbor = tree (I think). Why wasn't it given an English name? Why has this Latin name stuck? Nyh 09:07, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I know nothing on this topic in particular, but I presume it's because it sounds more sophisticated. -- Zanimum 17:54, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Arbor Day UK[edit]

Arbor day is an ancient tree dressing festival unique to the village of Aston on Clun in South Shropshire. It is, in fact the only village in the UK to continue with this festival. This is due to a special wedding pageant that commemorates a wedding in the 1700s. For full details see: www.arbortreeday.co.uk

The material on Gothem City is interesting, but needs more context. Where is it? Is it a fictional town? Are there citations to support the material? --Ben 12:21, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Arbor Day in the Commonwealth[edit]

Arbor Day is properly called Arbor Day in the Commonwealth, not Arbour Day. The word "arbour" derives from a Latin word for "herb" and is only properly used for a shaded sitting place in a garden, while "arbor" comes directly from the Latin for tree. Any Google search of a Commonwealth place and "Arbour Day" will return far fewer results than a search of the place and "Arbor Day". For instance:

Australia and "Arbour Day": 857 results Australia and "Arbor Day": 107,000 results

I can give you several references showing use of "arbor":

Hope that's enough to show that the day is not called "Arbour Day" outside of the United States. Lexicon (talk) 17:18, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images[edit]

You might think that an article about a day where one plants trees would have an image of the planting of a tree. Maybe someone could find one? Lexicon (talk) 17:21, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added a couple of photographs from an Arbor Day celebration. One is of people planting a tree. Jonathunder (talk)

Kenya's Pacific Coast?[edit]

Which school of geography teaches that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.148.123.76 (talk) 05:19, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

China section(s)[edit]

I have consolidated the People's Republic and Republic section into one section for China. Both the Taiwan Area and Mainland Area celebrate it on the same day and having both in the same section would better explain why this is the case. It is as politically neutral as possible and is not intended to dictate the political status of Taiwan.

The alliance (talk) 18:17, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
seems logical. apologies for reverting before. Hysteria18 (talk) 18:22, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have added the official titles of the two political entities as to align this article's referencing methodologies with other Wiki articles relating to Taiwan and Mainland China.Bdinchitwn (talk) 09:15, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the Chinese Mainland section needs to be revised. It is not true that every Chinese citizen has to plant 3-5 trees a year. If the section should be kept, references are apprecieted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.207.244.201 (talk) 02:54, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Images of the map of the countries[edit]

I think those are completely unnecessary. I propose for deletion of the images.--Rochelimit (talk) 11:48, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The images don't need to be "deleted" but I agree it would improve this article to remove them. Jonathunder (talk) 23:35, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Maproom (talk) 09:08, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I removed them, thanks for the comment.--Rochelimit (talk) 15:15, 19 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thumbnail Image of Official Arbor Day Flag[edit]

Arbor Day is an official holiday for the State of Nebraska, this year (2014) on April 25. I would like to see a thumbnail image of the Official Arbor Day Flag in this article, like the one at http://shop.arborday.org/product.aspx?zpid=671 like you have a thumbnail image of the Official Earth Day Flag in your article on Earth Day. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.13.6.166 (talk) 18:28, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers.—InternetArchiveBot (Report bug) 02:38, 17 October 2016 (UTC) It is beautiful. I love it so much.[reply]

Globalizing?[edit]

"Northrop was responsible for globalizing the idea when he visited Japan in 1895 and delivered his Arbor Day and Village Improvement message."

Let me get this straight: The idea started in Spain, then an American copied it and he's credited with "globalizing the idea" when he took it to Japan?!

--24.80.199.58 (talk) 09:36, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed it. --24.80.199.58 (talk) 09:44, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
