Add Carios?

[edit]

So, I recognize that soft tick taxonomy is still up in the air, particularly internationally. Be that as it may, most North American taxonomists adhere to the elevation of Carios to a genus as per Klompen and Oliver, 1993, removing it from Ornithodoros. I am considering writing an article on Carios (Ornithodoros) kelleyi, the bat soft tick, and it seems like an anachronism to refer to this species as O. kelleyi. The last piece of primary literature on PubMed refering to this species as a part of genus Ornithodoros dates from 2003, with all publications since then (6 in number) using Carios. Should Carios then be added to the list of genera? Vectorborne (talk) 17:35, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Taxonomy by committee

[edit]

The reference included in this article is by no means definitive as regards taxonomy of Argasidae. In fact, the authors state that they personally disagree on soft tick taxonomy, recognize the paraphyly of Ornithodoros, and endorse Hoogstraal's 1985 premolecular thesis of Argasid genera because they can't otherwise agree on a modern approach. Klompen and Oliver 1993 blew all the old classification schemes out of the water. I'm not saying it's perfect, and further refinements have been published, but to use a 30-year old classification method that ignores the molecular techniques needed to produce useful phylogenies for soft ticks is ignorant. Like the previous talk page contributor implies: anyone who said "Ornithodoros kelleyi" rather than "Carios kelleyi" would be considered a fool, even among most (if not all) of the authors of that reference paper. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.148.222.55 (talk) 16:53, 10 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
