Map[edit]

couldnt find a map of the location of the empire anywhere, but Image:Mali historic places.PNG shows the towns mentioned in the article -- Astrokey44|talk 03:41, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation[edit]

the attempt at disambiguation in the first sentence could be better worded and may not be necessary because the article is quite clear about what it is. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mamechishiki (talkcontribs) 22:11, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bamana vs. Bambara[edit]

The article is headed "Bamana" Empire, and the first sentence starts with this term, but pretty much every other reference to the topic in the article calls it the "Bambara" Empire. It would be helpful if there were some explanation of the difference; are there people who are offended by one or the other (like Inuit etc. vs. Eskimo) or is it more a matter of language conventions with political support (like Beijing vs. Peking or Yangon vs. Rangoon), or what? Judging by Google, usage is pretty evenly split. --Haruo (talk) 19:26, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bambara is the established English and French term (not sure but it may have originally come from the Fula term/pronunciation for the people). Bamanan is from the Bambara language. It is current fashion to try to use the endonyms for African peoples (but apparently not peoples of Europe or Asia), but IMO that ought to be discussed more fully in Wikipedia before any major shift.--A12n (talk) 03:44, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Preach! seems exclusive for Africans--Inayity (talk) 16:45, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Name of the state[edit]

Would like to propose a review of the title of this article. There are several issues, not the least of which is that there was a second major Bambara state during the period - Kaarta. Another is a question as to whether the Segu state had a term for itself that might be appropriately translated; or alternatively if our commonly used terms "empire" or "kingdom" might be better as a parenthetical component in the title. I may be wrong, but "Bamanan Empire" as much as "Bambara Empire" may be our own terms of convenience - not necessarily bad, but not to be used in title a way gives the impression that it was a formal title like "Republic of Mali" today (and thereby creating an artifact). Or it may be that there are not really any good alternatives for a title, in which case a paragraph in this article or a new generic article on states of West Africa in the 17th-19th centuries, could explain a bit about the local context of kings, kingdoms, etc.--A12n (talk) 04:14, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think Wiki policy WP:TITLE on naming is the best policy (caveats should be as you said in the body of the article without fringing out) And as you mentioned these names are compromises so we can discuss the histories we a. do not have full info about. b. no authentic tradition of naming (like Europe). --Inayity (talk) 17:53, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I support the above suggestion of A12n to review the name of the article. In the majority of the sources, the entity is called "Segu Bambara State" which resolves the mentioned ambiguity with Kaarta states and satisfies the recongnizibility requirement of WP:TITLE. The term "Bamana Empire" seems to be relatively new and related to a single publication "The Bamana Empire by the Niger: Kingdom, Jihad and Colonization 1712-1920".
