Disambiguating to this page

[edit]

I periodically try to disambiguate links to "battery." I have come across quite a few links that need to link to this use of the term. Although "Wikipedia is not a dictionary," I have not found a decent alternative to adding this page. I did try adding deep links to the list of baseball terms, but that seemed fairly weak to me -Arch dude 19:49, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Drastic trimming

[edit]

I have cut a lot of material on this page for two main reasons. First, the Answers.com reference is a truly weak source, as anybody can submit an answer even if they are making it up. For instance, the term 'battery' is already very well tracked back to the 1860s, making it incorrect to say that 'battery' is called that because of all the batters faced by the two battermen. Secondly, I took out the two descriptive paragraphs that expanded on the pitcher's and catcher's individual roles. Such expansion belongs solely on the pitcher and catcher pages. What would go here, but hasn't been added, is the kind of psychological connection and teamwork required of the pitcher and catcher as a team of two. Other material appropriate to this page would be mention of famous batteries such as 1960s-era Steve Canton and Tim McCarver of the Cards followed by their even better pairing with the Phils in the '70s, and 1900-era Christy Mathewson and Frank Bowerman of the Giants, not to mention Cy Young and Lou Criger, an otherwise unspectacular player who was Young's preferred catcher. Check out Baseball Research Journal. Pitcher's Choice, by Stan Grosshandler. There's also Rick and Wes Ferrell, brothers and batterymates for the Red Sox and then the Senators in the 1930s, after which they competed against each other when Hall-of-Famer Rick went to play for the Browns. Further interesting information that could go here might be about the signals that pitchers and catchers use and how the two men might change them depending on the situation. Hell, I don't see why Hand signals (baseball) doesn't have its own article! ;^) Binksternet (talk) 05:51, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Posey and Bumgarner

[edit]

Where are they? I'm seeing 200+ for them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.163.83.121 (talk) 19:07, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ives

[edit]

Considering that Charles Ives was never known as a baseball player, I'm removing his picture. A pictures of actual baseball players would be better. Ego White Tray (talk) 02:22, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
