Wikifying

[edit]

Took my stab at wikifying this page. Did some fact checking and most of it seems accurate enough. Linked like crazy, and adjusted where the quotes come in. Also added the link at the bottom to wikiquote. I'll leave it for a few days and then remove the header if no one sees a problem with it. bdgrell 07:56, Apr 13, 2005 (UTC)

Under strength units?

[edit]

I realize that almost all, if not all, units were enormously under strength by this time, but I count five Union units ("regiments"). The total is given as a few thousand, or about 400+ per unit. Does this sound about right for this period? Student7 (talk) 18:12, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, although a regiment usually started the war with 1000 men, disease and battle casualties reduced them in size significantly. Unlike the practice in later American wars, losses were usually not replaced in existing units. New regiments were formed with new recruits. Hal Jespersen (talk) 18:53, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
