Opinion[edit]

This sentence "The Boers, who were the superior fighters due to a lifetime of warring with either British soldiers or African warriors, made maximum use of their skills." is an opinion and needs qualifying with a citation from the book or article from which it is extracted. -- PBS (talk)

Two Eland River Battles?[edit]

I thought the Battle of Elands River referred to the famous 11 day siege of 4-16 August 1900 fought between over 2000 Boers under the command of De La Ray up against around 300 Australians and 200 Rhodesians and Rhodesian Force under the command of Col Charles Hore ?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.69.14.46 (talk) 13:37, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There were two battles with similar names - the siege of Elands River is distinct from this action.

That would be Battle of Elands River (1900)?Richard Keatinge (talk) 12:02, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the Lancers did not surrender - not sure why it says 60 were taken prisoner as this is not true. Smuts' commando withdrew with A Squadron of the 17th Lancers arrived to assist their comrades in C Squadron.

This should be rectified. 41.202.71.251 (talk) 10:15, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We would need good sources. They certainly stopped fighting and the Boers re-equipped themselves from the Lancers' equipment and supplies, though the Boers were not in a position to keep prisoners and let them go free. Richard Keatinge (talk) 12:02, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Move?[edit]

Is it worth moving this page to "Battle of Modderfontein"? The current title is a bit confusing, as the action was on a different Elands River to the one in 1900. Any thoughts? Xyl 54 (talk) 23:44, 14 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
