Background: Causes section unfocused

[edit]

The Causes section at the end of the Background section is unfocused, containing details that are marginally relevant at best—loss of assets by Cuban emigres, the interest rate on the repayment bonds, "the fact that Fidel Castro was in favor of an aggregation of Central and South American states". These are hardly reasons for an invasion and not mentioned anywhere else in the article. Broadly speaking, the causes are:

  1. Economic: American assets and property nationalized (as discussed in the previous section, Tensions with the United States)
  2. Political: Castro increasingly hostile to U.S. The goal of the operation, to overthrow Castro (discussed in the next section), should be included in the Causes section. Additionally, the fact that Castro favored the Soviet Union and communism was surely a factor, but may be hard to quantify (there is danger of bias here, but maybe some reliable sources discussing it exist). Criticism of Castro as undemocratic may also have been a factor, or more of an excuse (again, danger of bias quantifying this).
  3. Cuban exiles: Besides the U.S. motivations, we should include the motivations of the Cuban exiles (mentioned by @Plazak: in the talk page archive)

Basically, the major causes are already discussed in the surrounding sections and this section should summarize them concisely. I plan to edit this section soon, but since my proposed changes essentially entail completely rewriting it, I am leaving this notice inviting discussion on what this section should contain. So please let me know if any of the content I mentioned should be excluded or if I missed something important that should be included. Thanks! Burritok (talk) 01:34, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I rewrote the section trying to capture the main causes without getting too bogged down in details discussed elsewhere in the article. There are some points still missing, including the motivation of the Cuban exile troops. If anyone has good points to add or sees something to correct, please do so! Burritok (talk) 06:15, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've been treating this section more as "Causes leading to the invasion" than as "Causes of the invasion's failure", which is already discussed in the Later Analysis section and includes your point. Burritok (talk) 16:47, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Best way to discuss poor referencing?

[edit]

I'm extremely inexperienced with Wikipedia, but I wanted to bring up a horrendous reference I found scanning this article today.

Under Invasion day (17 April) the article states『Osvaldo Ramírez (leader of the rural resistance to Castro) was captured by Castro's forces in Aromas de Velázquez, and immediately executed.』and the reference for this (165) goes to the landing page of what you could charitably describe as an amateurishly hosted independent commentary website that is extremely biased, and I cannot find any mention of Osvaldo Ramírez on that page. Should this line not be removed?

Misconceptions and how they are reflected in your “history”

[edit]

The Brigade 2506 was created after JFK became President. Why was it created? I cannot answer that, but I know one thing for sure, the whole plan hinged after the Brigade was organized, after JFK became President, in having air control; meaning NO Castro’s planes would be flying because our Air Force would have destroyed them prior to our landing at Playa Girón and Playa Larga where the heaviest fought took place. In Playa Larga heavy tank battles took place that evening and I don’t know if José Fajardo and his tank were there because we didn’t talk to tank crews, so heavy was the fight. I can only say that they fought bravely and I always be thankful….and José Fajardo was one tank commander. 2601:58A:8700:3760:803D:DBB5:A302:4D2D (talk) 00:14, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Citations

[edit]

Hello, has anyone else noticed an excess of citations? Some sentences have five for just one fact. A bit of redundancy is fine, but this seems excessive.

Tschau, Dwightol102 (talk) 16:45, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Excess citations always make me nervous. Sometimes someone will add a dubious fact cited to an unreliable source. Someone else will object, then the first editor will add six more citations to equally questionable sources to bolster their argument.
Feel free to investigate and fix these, or add Template:Excessive citations inline tags where needed. GA-RT-22 (talk) 20:45, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I also wonder if we really need all those "page number" templates. GA-RT-22 (talk) 21:10, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Belligerents are placed wrongly

[edit]

I think the way in which the Belligerents under the Quick Facts section are laid out is incorrect. I don't know how to fix it, if someone could fix it, that would be good. MiloWallace07 (talk) 11:27, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@MiloWallace07 Agreed, needs fixing for those last few rows CommandAShepard (talk) 07:53, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
