Citation on the bleedin' obvious[edit]

"One of the greatest dangers is the risk of being held underwater by two or more consecutive waves. Surviving a triple hold-down is extremely difficult and surfers must be prepared to cope with these situations.[citation needed]"

That's from the page. Whoever posted it needs citing must be either tediously bureaucratic or genuinely just not believe what is completely obvious. The statement is anecdotal if you want to be technical about it but that within limits, and especially in subjects as obvious as the one in question, is completely acceptable in an academic work. Let's pretend that this is an academic work and remove the citation needed mark. --Tubs uk (talk) 09:01, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Aileens[edit]

what about adding Aileen's wave in western Ireland to the list, its one of the biggest waves in the world, you have to be towed in and out —Preceding unsigned comment added by Irlargy (talkcontribs) 18:14, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Paddle In?[edit]

I'm gonna change the start where it says "paddle in," as tow-in big wave surfing is still considered big wave surfing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Winkie (talkcontribs) 14:05, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Remove Blue Crush[edit]

I make a motion to remove Blue Crush from the list of films about big wave surfing. First off, its not a film about surfing, but a romance movie with surfing in the background. A movie about surfing would be any movie that talks about the sport including the boards, spots, people, etc. involved, such as the remaining movies listed. Second, when compared to places like Jaws and Mavericks, Pipeline does not begin to compare. I would dare say pipeline is not big wave at all considering it is almost unheard of to do tow-ins (we wont even discuss how tow ins are the worst thing to happen to surfing ever). Religio Means To Bind[edit]

I removed the sentence "This group of men is known as Religio Means To Bind." from the intro, just after the line about how l33t tow-in surfers are. I don't think tow-in surfers are known as "Religio Means To Bind". It may have meant "This group of men is known as 'Religio' (which means 'to bind')", and if that's actually true (I couldn't find any evidence of it being a widespread term myself) someone should restore it with that correction. -- Orbst (talk) 13:17, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removing link to Cyclops[edit]

I'm taking out the link to Cyclops because it just goes to the unrelated article about the mythological creature. I couldn't find any reference to the wave on the disambiguation page. SaSSafraS LTK (talk) 23:03, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Only" female surfer removed[edit]

I removed the reference to Maya Gabeira as the "only" female big wave surfer. A quick google search turns up several others - Jamilah Star, Keala Kennelly, Easkey Britton, etc. SaSSafraS LTK (talk) 23:26, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:2010 mavericks competition.jpg to appear as POTD soon[edit]

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:2010 mavericks competition.jpg will be appearing as picture of the day on October 20, 2011. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2011-10-20. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :) Thanks! howcheng {chat} 16:34, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Big wave surfing

A man engaging in big wave surfingatMavericks, located just north of Half Moon Bay, California. Big wave surfing is a discipline within surfing in which experienced surfers paddle into or are towed onto waves which are at least 20 ft (6.1 m) high, and is a hazardous activity, as surfers can be pushed far beneath the surface of the water after a wipeout.Photo: Shalom Jacobovitz

Paddle-In Surfing[edit]

Might as well rename this as Jeff Rowley's calendar. Can't criticize his accomplishments -- don't know much about the sport. But a rewrite is in order, and maybe a bit of research to include some other surfers beyond the first paragraph. GeeBee60 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 12:10, 5 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
