• Remove the comma after "before taking the role".
• Remove the comma after "opening lines".

• No to these, too. In the first instance it is introducing another primary clause (there's much more information after the "but"), in the second it is used to indicate the next clause applies to the subject of the previous clause ("given a nod") rather than simply continuing to describe the "opening lines".
