"Parallel Cinema"

As of yet, there is no Wikipedia entry for 'Parallel Cinema,' and I was wondering if an Indian film aficionado or historian could contribute something on this movement. In doing some editing on Charulata, I encountered the term (which I've run across before), and think it's relevant enough to leave in, but someone more qualified than I should also try to shed some light upon the term. Sources needed[edit]

Style[edit]

Charulata belongs to the Indian tradition of the parallel cinema, and Ray has cited the influence of French New Wave directors such as François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard during its making.[citation needed]

Responses[edit]

Many critics and commentators consider Charulata to be Ray's greatest achievement. Ray himself remarked that it had the "least flaws" of all his movies, and that the character of Charulata was his favorite among his many films.[citation needed]

WikiProject class rating[edit]

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as stub, and the rating on other projects was brought up to Stub class. BetacommandBot 17:37, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Date of action[edit]

The movie explicitly sets the date as 1879-80. The editor reads an 1879 date off the newspaper masthead, reference is made to the Afghan War (1878-80) and the contestants in the 1880 British election are identified as the Tory "Dizzy" (ie Disraeli) and the Liberal Gladstone, who won (hence the office celebration). Whatever daily calendar Ray purported to use as a prop was obviously out of synch with the director's plain intent. Seth A. Halpern (talk) 23:30, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Date of action[edit]

P. S. May 17 also fell on a Monday in 1880, the year of the British parliamentary election referred to in the movie; thus there was no actual conflict between Ray's intent and his use of a prop calendar. Seth A. Halpern (talk) 23:59, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
