Needs translation fixed

[edit]

The article says, "Churwalden is a semitourist community." In English, we don't have a word "semitourist", so I can only guess at the intended meaning. I am guessing that it was a sentence translated from a artile written in German. Perhaps someone else can discover the correct translation. Mark (talk) 23:01, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It belongs to Swiss structural typology of municipalities (which distinguishes between "touristische" and "semitouristische Gemeinden" in German, or "communes touristiques" and "communes semi-touristiques" in French). In some English language publications (on this particular Swiss administrative socio-economic typology) I found "semi-touristic", so the sentence could be changed to "Churwalden is a semi-touristic community", but without further explanation that sentence isn't very informative to most readers either. ---Sluzzelin talk 23:17, 26 February 2024 (UTC) ... (added later) I changed the sentence for the sake of correct English, but still remain unconvinced that it (the sentence) alone is worth keeping (it might be worth expanding though). ---Sluzzelin talk 23:30, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for confirming that this is indeed a translation problem. Is there some place you know of where I can read what is meant by the "touristische" and "semitouristische Gemeinden" designations"?

I found a paper by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office from 2005 (Die Raumgliederungen der Schweiz by Martin Schuler, Pierre Dessemontet and Dominique Joye, can't link to the pdf-file) which defines semi-touristic municipalities as follows (my unauthorized translation, I didn't find it in English):
"Municipalities that don't belong to any metropolitan agglomeration and meet one of the following conditions:
  • resident population < 100, and tourism (measured in annual overnight stays) > 150 per inhabitant
  • 100 < resident population < 200, and tourism > 100 per inhabitant
  • 200 < resident population < 300, and tourism > 80 per inhabitant
  • 300 < resident population < 500, and tourism > 60 per inhabitant
  • 500 < resident population < 2000, and tourism > 45 per inhabitant
  • resident population > 2000, and tourism > 30 per inhabitant"
So Churwalden, with a resident population of over 2000, fits the last one. In order for it to be touristic rather than semi-touristic, the number of annual overnight stays in Churwalden would have to exceed 45 per inhabitant (not just 30 per inhabitant). I'm still not sure it makes sense to use the term "semi-touristic" in the article. Tourism is obviously important for Churwalden, and the distinction between "touristic" and "semi-touristic" is an arbitrary one that serves the Federal Statistical Office's purpose, and I don't think it will be commonly understood by most readers of en.wikipedia. ---Sluzzelin talk 14:37, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
