Unnamed section

[edit]

I know this page is about an open-source product, but it does read a bit like an advertisement. -Anonymous, 5-29-06, 14:32 GMT —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.34.128.120 (talkcontribs) 07:34, May 29, 2006

FreeBSD

[edit]

DTrace has already been ported to FreeBSD, read: http://bsd.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/05/29/1144234&from=rss —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.47.157.93 (talkcontribs) 10:30, May 29, 2006

noob

[edit]

what is it? what does the program do? of what use is it in practice? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.89.0.118 (talk) 08:00, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It seems like these questions are already addressed in the article -- can you point to specific places where what's written is inadequate? It does seem like the lead can be sharpened up a bit; I'll take a stab at it.--NapoliRoma (talk) 17:56, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FreeBSD

[edit]

Dtrace was commited to FreeBSD some time ago.. it's kernel tracing only for now and not enabled by default but it definitely works there and is present. The article should reflect that... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.28.127.2 (talk) 08:28, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DTrace seems to be enabled by default in the recently released FreeBSD 7.1 (as of 2009-01-05) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 169.158.84.254 (talk) 12:42, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

D a subset of C?

[edit]

Looking at the syntax of D, I don't think it's technically a subset of C. It may be more accurate to say that the action section uses a language that is a subset of C, but, certainly, the event description is not a subset of C. Khatchad (talk) 02:58, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A book

[edit]

Hmm, I wrote a book about SystemTap and DTrace: Dynamic Tracing with DTrace & SystemTap. It is free and licensed under CC-NC-SA terms. Can I add it to external links? Wouldn't it will be considered as spam? Мяут (talk) 07:33, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! The book looks very good to me, and IMHO it would be perfectly fine to add it into the DTrace § External links section. However, the section might use some trimming, but that isn't urgent. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 04:04, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

DTrace licensing updates

[edit]

Ablog post from today has bubbled up some action from last summer, which I've worked into the article.

The licensing information at the end of the lead was a bit sketchy and under-sourced (Oracle's announcement that they were doing a DTrace port to Linux was unsourced, and further exposition on that referenced "slide 28" of a Brendan Gregg presentation. Said slide reads in its entirety: "Why doesn't Linux have DTrace?" It's unclear, at least to me, if there was some part of a later slide that the editor was thinking of, so that still could use some work.

The news from August is that Oracle has released code under the GPL and UPL, so I've noted that, citing a blog (which in turn links to Oracle sources on this).

As I mentioned above, there's more work that remains to be done here. This includes moving most of this out of the lead and into the body.--NapoliRoma (talk) 19:54, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
