977 not the flight number?[edit]

Aviation Herald is reporting that it's number 1993. http://avherald.com/h?article=4508fb60&opt=4096 --Mareklug talk 18:31, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Did you mean 997?

997 and 1993, and other odd-numbered flights, are out-bound flight to Abuja according to the Dana Air reservation system. Flights from Abuja to Lagos appear to be even-numbered flights. Reports that 997 was in-bound and approaching landing at Lagos doesn't seem to make sense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.26.51.152 (talk) 19:00, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

5N-RAM[edit]

5N-RAM should redirect here. It's the designation of the airplane involved, and also the most prominent use of the number. 70.24.251.208 (talk) 13:03, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The aircraft registration is an unlikely search term. Using "5N-RAM" in the standard search box already has this as the top article. MilborneOne (talk) 15:14, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's more likely that a bunch of redirects created for many articles on wikipedia. It appears on accident reports, so is likely enough. 70.24.251.208 (talk) 05:21, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Alhaji Ibrahim Damcida[edit]

I restored him as a victim as he was an under-secretary (Parliamentary Secretary), which, under the Westminster political system is usually elected. Since Nigeria uses the Westminster system, it is likely that he was an elected member of Parliament at one time, thus qualifying as wikinotable. Ravendrop 16:24, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can't this just be included as prose? Creating a list of one seems a little silly. Khazar2 (talk) 20:57, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Image[edit]

I removed the image of a Spanair MD 82. It is inappropriate to show the image of another airline as an "example" image of a crashed flight. Only a Dana Air image would be appropriate. If none is available, then it is better to show nothing. Chitu (talk) 01:28, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not really. I know this will be WP:OTHERSTUFF but almost every other page has pictures of a similar plane. It is not inappropriate. It gives the reader a picture of what the plane looked like. --Arsenalkid700 (talk) 02:25, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
IMO the present image of a "Nordic airlink" plane should be removed immediately. It is not acceptable to show another clearly identifiable airline's aircraft at the top of an article about a terrible crash. People who want to know what that type of aircraft looks like have only to click on the link. 86.183.0.126 (talk) 00:45, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agree and the Spanair one has been added back, Spanair doesnt actually exist anymore but in previous accident articles we have found somebody with the right skills to "paint out" the markings. MilborneOne (talk) 08:45, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Number of Indians[edit]

From this BBC article,it appears that in addition to the co-pilot, one Indian passenger was also on board. This doesn't tally with the count shown in the article (or with the source used). Do we have official figures ? Chocolate Horlicks (talk) 04:44, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ex-GPA MD dies in Lagos plane crash[edit]

Picture of Spanair MD-80 series has been removed twice now[edit]

There is apparently concern, that somehow illustrating the crash article of a Dana Air MD-80 series aircraft with that in another livery somehow slanders the other airline. As the picture was re-added by an experienced aviation editor/administrator, but removed twice by relatively inexperienced editors, perhaps this warrants some discussion here? --Mareklug talk 12:04, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but that's a ridiculous argument. The picture is to show what type of plane (i.e. size, engined) crashed, not which airline it was. This is clearly mentioned in the caption. Additionally, this practice is done on almost every other developed accident article where there is no picture of the aircraft in the particular airlines livery. Finally, the current photo doesn't even have a visible airline livery. Ravendrop 12:47, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Dont have a problem with the current Ukrainian image but not using the Spanair image because it puts Spanair in a bad light is clearly erroneous as the airline doesnt exist. As Ravendrop says it is only to give the reader an idea of what the aircraft looks like, clearly the correct aircraft or even airline would be nice but it is not allways freely available. We have in the past altered images to remove identification of a particularly airline but that is rare and an image that best shows the aircraft configuration is best, but the plain aircraft used now is OK so perhaps we should leave it be. MilborneOne (talk) 14:36, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, it is not a ridiculous argument. In fact, saying it is a ridiculous argument is itself ridiculous. If you were the boss of XYZ airlines, would you want your logo to be the first thing that people saw when looking up an article about an unrelated air crash? 81.159.107.182 (talk) 11:49, 8 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect as Spanair no longer exists it is unlikely to have a boss. MilborneOne (talk) 17:38, 8 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Maintenance company[edit]

I have removed mention of a maintenance company Mytechnic Engineering as I cant see the relevance it is something we dont normally mention unless it is directly concerned with the accident. We dont mention other agencies that maintained the aircraft, engines or carry out the first line maintenance, I would be interested to know why we single this one out. MilborneOne (talk) 19:31, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Agree with the removal. Ravendrop 22:12, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I also agree with your removal....William 22:49, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bird Strike(s) is caused prior accident[edit]

Do you agree this source? [1]

Second Interim Statement[edit]

The Nigeria AIB today issued a "Second Interim Statement" regarding their investigation. Read it here. --71.178.50.222 (talk) 18:09, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This document seems to contain one page and no new findings on the accident itself. The first linked report does not mention a probable cause either, therefore, I am removing the claim (in the summary) that the cause has been identified, because this is from an interview, not from an official report, let alone a final one. However, I would not object if this claim would be reentered with proper qualification. The complete AIB website is unaccessible to me ("403 forbidden"). (Edit:) The interview can be found here: A YEAR AFTER FLIGHT 992 - The second report is around one year newer than it, and there is no mention of the accident cause. --Mopskatze (talk) 00:28, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The AIB website seems to have had a relaunch, so I updated the links to the reports. There seem to be no new officially published conclusions after two years. --Mopskatze (talk) 04:15, 15 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Location[edit]

I found that the coordinates in the article only point to the airport. I did some looking around and think I've found the actual site in Google Earth. If you look at historical imagery for 2012-06-04, it seems to be visible. 3°18'50.5"E, 6°40'19.0"N. If someone can verify this the article can be updated. I am not at all sure about this, it's just near a street mentioned in the aviation herald article, and appears to be the location. Autumn Wind (talk) 14:50, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What does this mean?[edit]

What does the phrase, "fractured flush," mean in this sentence?: "Investigators revealed that the fuel feeder lines that attach to the No. 5 fitting (primary and secondary) were both fractured flush [sic]." Google search returns nothing relevant. Autodidact1 (talk) 23:49, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Needs to be extensively rewritten[edit]

Struggled to get through reading this article, the style does not sound encyclopaedic (unlike other articles on air accidents) and reads more like a story. May have been translated. 95.145.108.221 (talk) 22:32, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
