Oscar Wilde did famously wear the green carnation -which has been used for other indications of what we now might call 'gay culture' (e.g. Noel Coward song) but I believe it comes from a practice of groups of aesthetes in Paris. Wilde took the idea and used it to cause minor scandal for the opening night of Lady Windermere's fan, after which it was more closely linked with Uranianism (Homosexuality). This article was just converted from British to American English. I'm not sure how to apply WP:RETAIN in this case. The article started as a stub written in British English (using the spelling "colour") [1]. The first post stub edit introduced the American spelling "color" while retaining instances of British "colour" ([2]). I'm not seeing any point in the history of the article where all instances of colo(u)r have been spelled consistently. My reading of WP:RETAIN suggests that American English should be used as it was used in the first post stub edit, but the article has a long history of using predominantly British spellings. A common variety has white flowers flecked with red. As a child I used to call it the "peppermint" carnation.
