ENSEEIHT, Toulouse better than École nationale supérieure d'électronique, d'électrotechnique, d'informatique, d'hydraulique et des télécommunications

[edit]

This is a good example for the naming conventions. In this particular case, it is pretty obvious that

ENSEEIHT, Toulouse

is a better title than the long and monstrous

École nationale supérieure d'électronique, d'électrotechnique, d'informatique, d'hydraulique et des télécommunications

Most French natives reading ENSEEIHT, Toulouse will understand that it is kind of engineering school situated in Toulouse...

École nationale supérieure d'électronique, d'électrotechnique, d'informatique, d'hydraulique et des télécommunications is a monstrous name almost unreadable, unpronouncable even for a French native...

In this particular case, the acronym + the town gives much more information than the complete "official" name.

WP gave the good example of "Bill Clinton" which is a better totle than the long official name. Euroflux (talk) 12:24, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move

[edit]
The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: Move. Clear consensus that the full name is not preferable, and that adding "Toulouse" is unnecessary disambiguation. Cúchullain t/c 19:00, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

École nationale supérieure d'électronique, d'électrotechnique, d'informatique, d'hydraulique et des télécommunications (ENSEEIHT, Toulouse) ENSEEIHT – Per WP:COMMONNAME. Although less well known than other acronyms such as NATO, Sonar and scuba, it is almost universally known to those in the known as ENSEEIHT. Although not in itself a reason, English Google searches on the two names reveal 484 instances of the full name versus 153,000 for the acronym. Also, we don't use acronyms in parenthesis in page titles when the name is spelled out. --Bob247 (talk) 23:18, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

[edit]
Any additional comments:

The complete name is obviously inappropriate ; too long, impossible to read, to pronounce, and to remember... ; in addition the interposition of "hydraulique" in the name is rather weird... "hydraulique" is an old fashioned concept ; today we would say "mécanique des fluides", but it has little to do with the other electrical engineering items. On the other hand, the acronym ENSEEIHT is rather unknown... You can afford to say ENAC, Supaéro, ECP, Supélec without specifying the location but ENSEEIHT is rather regional. I know the name because I have lived in Toulouse but most Parisian students might ignore it. That is why I suggest the title "ENSEEIHT Toulouse". Engineering schools from Grenoble have complicate names as well and many people might think that ENSEEIHT is a school from grenoble. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Euroflux (talkcontribs) 18:02, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's unnecessary to include "Toulouse" in the name because ENSEEIHT is unambiguous; it only refers to one school, so similarly-named schools are irrelevant if they're not actually the same. Compare to Miami University (in Ohio) and University of Miami (actually in Miami). It's not necessary to name them Miami University (Ohio)orUniversity of Miami (Florida), because we can deal with any potential confusion through hatnotes. And unless Grenoble has a specific school with a similar acronym, we probably don't need to worry about that at all. ENSEEIHT alone is preferable as concise and unambiguous. --BDD (talk) 18:36, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Phonetically, "ENSEEIHT" and "ENSET" sound the same... The first one is in Toulouse and the second one is in cachan, close to Paris Euroflux (talk) 18:41, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There's no mention of "ENSET" on École Normale Supérieure de Cachan, but we could still use hatnotes. This article is about the Toulouse university. For the Cachan university, see École Normale Supérieure de Cachan or something like that. --BDD (talk) 19:46, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No need to add Toulouse after ENSEEIHT, as there are no other schools with that acronym. The use of hatnotes will clear up confusion per wikipolicy. --Bob247 (talk) 15:11, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
