Cross in what sense[edit]

The article begins

The Eleanor crosses are lavishly decorated stone monuments in the shape of a cross…

Had I started this article, I would have written something very similar. (I live not that far from one of them.) But looking at the pictures, I don’t see the cross shape. Either in elevation or plan view. Any ideas? Or am I missing something obvious? —Ian Spackman 14:07, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd suspect that they are similar to medieval market crosses which have mostly diverged from being cross shaped. Interestingly Chamber's Dictionary includes, 6 a a monument, not necessarily in the form of a cross; b as a place name: the site of such a monument. But it would seem to be true that this article shouldn't say Eleanor crosses are in the shape of a cross, so good catch. -- Solipsist 12:07, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. Interesting! Ian Spackman 03:09, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Where is the centre of London?[edit]

The article says that the original cross was on the south side of Trafalgar Square, and was replaced by the equestrian statue of Charles I. Well, according to encyclopaedia britannica, that statue is on the north-east side of the square. Anybody know for a fact where the original cross was? It would be nice to know the exact centre of London, just for future displays of pedantry! The Enc. Brit. picture

Stamford[edit]

Why is it within the rules to describe the Stamford re-erection as 'contraversial' rather than 'Stunning', Beautiful' or 'Original'. The design is massively based on the Fragment mentioned, which appears to have come frem Rock House Brunnian (talk) 22:38, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Map?[edit]

Any possibility of someone clever making a map showing the locations of the twelve resting points, so we can visualise the final journey of Eleanor? Cheers, LindsayHi 09:18, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request added here, which is what you do. Johnbod (talk) 14:02, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. Thank you, Johnbod. I had no idea such a page existed. There's so much more to WP to explore.... Cheers, LindsayHi 14:05, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I see that this request got marked as "stale" and closed. I'll re-request it because, now that I've added coordinates for all the locations, it should be a no-brainer for our mapping experts to do this. Phil Bridger (talk) 17:25, 14 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Why not just use the England map with the {{Location map+}} template and superimpose the labels on it. I used the map of the East Riding of Yorkshire with labels in the article List of civil parishes in the East Riding of Yorkshire. You have all of the coordinates so should be just a case of putting them in. Keith D (talk) 22:27, 14 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think they need a map to work with, which I didn't supply, as I'm useless with playing with images. Johnbod (talk) 22:36, 14 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone ahead and worked out how to do this myself (with help from Keith's hint). I think the request at the graphic lab was being ignored because it was made in plain English rather than by following the letter of the instructions that mandate the use of some template to make a simple request. Phil Bridger (talk) 11:34, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good work—it’s a genuine addition to the article and works perfectly! Ian Spackman (talk) 12:19, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree; it's great. Thank you, Cheers, LindsayHi 03:07, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, great work - that's ideal! Johnbod (talk) 04:22, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment[edit]

I think this article is close to being a B grade article, but it would need a bit more in the way of citations spread about in-line for that. I'd like to see it made up to FA eventually! It should not be too much work, I think some of the existing citations could be re-used later in the text, for example. If anyone has access to those texts, that is!--Robert EA Harvey (talk) 11:42, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Grantham cross[edit]

In August 2015, a memorial plaque to the now-destroyed cross at Grantham was installed at the Guildhall.[1] Kelly hi! 17:30, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

On Charing Cross[edit]

Not *just* a replica of the original cross, apparently: https://www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog/2014/04/01/chance-to-see-inside-the-lost-church-under-charing-cross-station/ 81.134.152.4 (talk) 15:22, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image[edit]

There's an excellent early-C14 manuscript illumination, depicting what is widely agreed to be an unidentified Eleanor cross, in the Luttrell Psalter: available on Commons at p. 8 of this file. It would make a good addition to this article, but needs to be extracted and cropped, which is a bit beyond me. Does anyone want to volunteer? GrindtXX (talk) 14:56, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Here you are - too fuzzy to use, imo.

Johnbod (talk) 17:24, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, many thanks for that, but I see what you mean: certainly no use for the lede image, which was one possibility I had in mind. It's also flawed by the fact that it's not an identifiable cross (and not certainly an Eleanor cross), and by the fact that we already have quite a lot of images. I still think it could be worked in somewhere, but I'll think about it. GrindtXX (talk) 18:35, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Map problem[edit]

The map in this article used to show a section of England running from Lincoln in the north to London in the south, with the locations of the crosses marked. Something has gone wrong in the past few weeks, so that the focus of the map has shifted northwards: it is now centred on Lincoln, and only shows the northernmost 5 crosses in the bottom half. I have no idea what has caused this glitch. I posted a request on the Map workshop page a couple of days ago, but no responses so far. If no-one is willing or able to fix it, an alternative solution would be to use this map at right (though I'm not over-keen on it). Any comments? GrindtXX (talk) 18:26, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The immediate problem has now been fixed by AntiCompositeNumber. I'm still in two minds about which map is preferable (or whether further adjustments should be made to improve the existing map), so comments still welcome. GrindtXX (talk) 13:20, 13 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
