There are endurance rides longer than 100 miles; for example the Shahzada is a 250 mile ride.

There is a user on citizendium that writes a lot about horses - you should check it out. www.citizendium.org

US-centric?[edit]

Does this article really reflect endurance riding all over the world? Many things, like preference for western saddles among beginners, seems rather reflecting the personal impressions of Americans than paint a general image of the sport. Am I wrong? --Ibn Battuta (talk) 23:13, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article could use some expansion, particularly given that the competition is FEI recognized. I think the only people who have ever written much on it are all Americans, which explains much. I've done some wordsmithing and cleanup here, but haven't added much in the way of actual content. The western saddle thing probably should be modified to indicate that it is common in the US and Canada. Good point. Montanabw(talk) 02:51, 24 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it is somewhat all over the place. The requirement to dress in a way befitting the sport is Australian, and isn't present in the US rules. I don't know about other countries. It also shows some degree of bias by region - the various AERC regions tend to have slightly different approaches - for example, in the northwest, a BC award is almost always given for the limited distance rides. In other regions, this may be rare.

Also I don't recall any requirment to be mounted at the start or finish, and the limited distance riders are almost always off walking to pulse down at the finish.

Some other issues - helmets are _not_ required except for Junior riders. People with common sense wear them, but there is no requirement. FEI rules 809:1 released 1 august 2014 (international rules worldwide) says "Protective headgear, of a recognised equestrian/endurance standard and securely fastened, is compulsory for all persons at all Endurance events whilst mounted."

I also don't think there is any correspondence between the level at which one rides and the type of saddle. Most of the saddles we use are really hybrids in any case, with some features typical of Western (e.g., larger area), and some features typical of English.

Some areas that would be good to add - the Australians have a novice system that the US sport lacks. It would be good to explain the differences, and add in how different countries work if someone knows.

The bit about limited distance being only for novice riders and/or equines is controversial. Not everyone agrees, and some feel that LD is a valid option if the rider simply prefers to ride shorter rides.

The first world championships in endurance was not as stated in the article 1998, but 1986 i Italy. The distances published in the FEI star competion are not correct.

The historical development of the sport could use a lot of elaboration, too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.107.0.74 (talk) 01:51, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So someone who cares please dive in and start improving the article! Montanabw(talk) 17:18, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mongol derby[edit]

I no next to nothing about the subject but I recently saw this article on cnn.com about the Mongol Derby which is a 1,000km equine endurance race across mongolia. Just curious if someone would like to mention it on the article or somewhere else. link to article Regards, — -dainomite   21:56, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think it should get its own standalone article; it isn't a race where a single horse goes 1000 miles, just the riders, who trade off to new horses. So not precisely the same thing as here. But cool, nonetheless Montanabw(talk) 19:02, 25 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

... in these places, no more than 10% of the route can be on hard-surfaced roads.[edit]

Needs citation. I believe this is a rule for a particular organization and not for endurance riding generally. Sharonhahn (talk) 22:07, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Whole article needs more citations. Anyone who wants to add footnotes and citations, go for it! (I can coach formatting if you need help) Montanabw(talk) 07:53, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
