Eucharist?

[edit]

I'm wondering what the evangelical covenant church's theolgy of the eucharist is. In memory of Christ (only)? Real presence? How? Body and Blood of Christ?

Beth

I think they're Lutheran, which means that they hold neither to Catholic nor Reformed understandings of the Eucharist. They definitely would reject transubstantiation. --One Salient Oversight 06:31, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Clarified church's position on abortion, added material on the "four distinctives" of the Evangelical Covenant Church, repointed Adherents.com link to a current page- however, because adherents.com continually updates its database and doesn't support permalinks by denomination, I'd suggest finding a different source. (also, adherents.com doesn't seem to like terminal slashes, which seemed to upset the link- not wanting to spam up the works too much, I left it be for a more wiki-knowledgable editor to fix)

The Church has no official position on the Eucharist. They take a middle of the road position on contentious issues which is aimed at uniting Christians to bring the gospel to the world.

Here is a nice, but slow loading PDF dissertation on the history of the denomination. [1] PDF. It is 353 pages long, so I don't have time to incorporate it while at work. GRBerry 19:42, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

T(h)om Hanks

[edit]

Deleted reference to Tom (Thom) Hanks as a notable member of Marin Covenant Church as a youth. Tom is not presently a member of Marin Covenant; the "notable" heading is intended to list those currently involved in the ECC. Thom's experience in the ECC youth ministry in the 1970's was actually at Oakland Covenant primarily, just down the hill from where he attended Skyline High School. -steve

Divestment of Sudan?

[edit]

Quote: Recent annual meeting resolutions have demonstrated that the ECC supports creation care (evangelical environmentalism), the divestment of Sudan ...
What's meant by "divestment of Sudan"? Someone please clarify, thanks. Maikel (talk) 12:25, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My guess is they no longer invest in companies based in Sudan. Whether this extends to companies that do business with Sudan, but aren't based there, is unclear. Noca2plus (talk) 00:47, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Would somebody be willing to go about getting permission to use the ECC's logo / emblem to put in the infobox? Amkdude2 (talk) 16:31, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Cleaned up discussion on the topic of Human Sexuality to identify the official position of the denomination, taken directly from its resolution. Attenuated the use of language which had suggested some ECC churches have taken an official position contrary to the denomination, and underscored the specific Portland congregation which took a different stand. Factually some members and affiliated individuals of Covenant congregations may not subscribe to the Resolution of the ECC on Human Sexuality, but all of the member churches and credentialed ministerial staff officially agree to abide by the Covenant policies and resolutions on this subject. - steve — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.32.144.2 (talk) 03:04, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Agree with the revisions above and appreciate the help in providing accurate information. Also, noted that, although the ECC remains more conservative or traditionalist, some liberal-leaning congregations, particularly a Portland congregation, do remain affiliated with ECC, as described on their official connections, although they are no longer funded by the ECC. Also, pointed out that ECC ministers are not permitted to perform same-gender marriages but that they may attend a same-gender marriage if they so choose.[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.3.186.249 (talk) 08:01, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Status

[edit]

Updated the number of conferences of the denomination to include the new status of the Alaska Conference. -steve — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.32.144.2 (talk) 21:33, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sourcing Issues

[edit]

I believe that this article relies too heavily on non-independent sources. This should be address to comply with WP:NPOV and and WP:V. A large portion of this article is either unsourced or soley sourced by sources created by the Covenant Church and their affiliates. Cedar Tree 06:37, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
