Sovereign entities[edit]

"Only nine sovereign entities are not members of FIFA: Monaco, Vatican City, United Kingdom, Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Palau and Nauru." On what basis are these nine counted but others aren't (Kosovo, Sahrawi, etc)? Does FIFA have the power of diplomatic recognition? Does FIFA accept the UN as the arbiter of what entities are sovereign? --Khajidha (talk) 12:38, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"An" or "the" governing association[edit]

The lead sentence states that FIFA "is the international governing body of association football, futsal and beach soccer." This implies that is the only existing, or even the only possible, international governing body for the sports. This inaccurate and misleading. While FIFA is clearly the most world governing body, there are probably other international governing bodies, and nothing is stopping Rupert Murdoch, or anybody else, from creating a competing international governing body. Rks13 (talk) 05:09, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's the only body so it's the definite article. When you list a second international governing body here or in the article, you can make indefinite. Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:12, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
NF-Board, Confederation of Independent Football Associations, FIFI, and the defunct British Associations organization for association football (see Non-FIFA international football), FIFUSA for futsal, and Beach Soccer Worldwide for beach soccer all fit the definition exactly. What's more, UEFA, CONCACAF, the IFAB, and the FA are all international governing bodies of one sort or another. While UEFA is also a constituent member of FIFA (or something like that), it is also an international governing body on its own. IFAB is not subordinate to FIFA, although it is not exactly a governing body in the same way. My point is that calling FIFA "the ..." implies that no other organization could exist, and that is simply not true. Rks13 (talk) 05:42, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You mean the article that starts "FIFA is the international governing body of association football"? Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:46, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'll get around to fixing that one soon. Read the second sentence. Rks13 (talk) 05:48, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing needs to be fixed though. Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:50, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
NF-Board, Confederation of Independent Football Associations, FIFI, FIFUSA, and Beach Soccer Worldwide. Last chance to make an actual argument before I change the text. Rks13 (talk) 05:54, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to wait for others to comment or edit war over it. Your call. Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:59, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And for the record, if it's determined that a change is needed, I would suggest "is the largest and most influential international governing body of association football, futsal and beach soccer." Walter Görlitz (talk) 06:09, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There is another Fifa. In Jordan, there are the Fifa nature preserve, teh protected area, and the archeologically important cemetery site, which has been extensively looted. http://asorblog.org/landscapes-of-the-dead/, outofedenwalk.nationalgeographic.com/2014/04/11/drones-archaeologys-newest-tool-to-combat-looting/, jordantimes.com/red-dead-project-could-damage-archaeological-sites----report; www.rscn.org.jo/orgsite/RSCN/HelpingNature/ProtectedAreas/FifaNatureReserve/tabid/338/Default.aspx, http://www.secheresse.info/spip.php?article31690211.225.33.104 (talk) 00:22, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is FIFA. That is "Fifa". If it's notable, then an article could be created without problems. Walter Görlitz (talk) 00:34, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

1908 Olympics[edit]

I don't have access to good books on this at the moment, but the couple of sentences here] contradict the mention at History of FIFA (also unsourced) which says that tournament was staged by the FA. Also, if amateurism is a founding principal of FIFA, that should be mentioned prominently, not just in passing, and it should be possible to find good sources. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 16:34, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Major and minor tournaments[edit]

Is the division into "major" and "minor" tournaments based on any reliable source? Seems a little subjective / POV-y. Grover cleveland (talk) 06:47, 15 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

language?[edit]

Is there an official FIFA language? Specifically, is the current tournament really called "FIFA Women's World Cup", or is it named in some other language? Gah4 (talk) 07:12, 22 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As I now understand it, from discussion on another article, there are four official languages. However, as I understood it, the name that FIFA is an acronym for is only in French. I think that means that there are no official translations of FIFA itself, unlike the article seems to indicate. Gah4 (talk) 18:56, 1 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47474106

Please add BBC 2019 polls with 500 thousands respodents that stated Ronaldo as the best foreign midfielder in Premier League all time.

https://www.realmadrid.com/en/about-real-madrid/history/football-legends/cristiano-ronaldo-dos-santos-aveiro

In Real Madrid website clearly stated Ronaldo won 3 UEFA Super Cups with Madrid. Why Wiki only wrote Ronaldo won 2 ?? I think its 2016 Cup missing from Ronaldo honours. If you think Ronaldo didnt deserved that because he didnt played in the final. But let me inform you FIFA rule all the players who include the squad member deserve that club honour though they didnt play in final. If you do that for Ronaldo you must do that to all player dont make double standard. Ex : Ronaldo Brazil didnt played a single match in 1994 World Cup but Wiki wrote Ronaldo Brazil won 1994 World Cup. Roy Keane and Paul Scholes didnt played in Champions League 1999 Final but Wiki wrote they won it. Lionel Messi didnt played in Champions League 2006 final and Supercoppa Espana 2005 final but Wiki wrote Messi won both cups. Gareth Bale also didnt played in UEFA Super Cups 2016 final but Wiki wrote Gareth Bale won the cup. Please be fair otherwise wiki will judge undermining Ronaldo accomplishment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.119.66.58 (talk) 04:57, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Rankings[edit]

On what basis are the top 32 teams mentioned in the Rankings section? If it is about number of teams in the World Cup finals then I propose that it should be increased to 48 since the number of slots have been increased from 32 to 48 starting from 2026 FIFA World Cup. Footy2000 (talk) 08:51, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Top 20 is fine here i think. Also switched to a templated one, so this gets updated. automatically. And also changed the sentences, the ranking is no projection for the next world cup participants. -Koppapa (talk) 18:14, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

History of FIFA?[edit]

The more I visit this page the more I am curious about the History of FIFA. This History section doesn't quite touch on the extent of FIFA's history. Is this because the sources don't exist? I would imagine finding historical coverage around FIFA's existence wouldn't be terribly difficult. PubHobbyst (talk) 14:50, 18 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Culturally Backward"[edit]

Context-T he last line of the lead section is : "The current President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, is an apologist for human rights abuses in culturally backward counties."

Personally , I find it highly offensive that some nations are being branded as "culturally backward" especially when the source (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/63687412) does not mention so.

Thereby, we must remove this reference to nations being "culturally backward". Alexandria Bucephalous (talk) 03:42, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I believe my two edits may qualify for an award for "most minor edit in a page's history". You can mail the award to the Académie française; they probably don't get a lot of those. DFlhb (talk) 18:16, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Offside laws[edit]

As the name is football, why is the ruling of offside deemed to include bodies and arms, surely if the feet/head are behind the defenders feet/head, this should be deemed onside, not the swinging arms infront. Plays are to use feet and head. 92.30.108.117 (talk) 16:38, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation[edit]

"pronounced in English as /ˈfiːfə/ FEE-fə" Okay, I'll admit that as an American with little interest in sports AT ALL I have never listened to anyone saying this out loud, but I would like someone to confirm that this is correct. I could never say that with a straight face, as it reminds me too much of the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk: "fee fie foe fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman". --User:Khajidha (talk) (contributions) 14:07, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Add a Section on Criticism of FIFA[edit]

Considering the corruption and well documented bloat where money spent to grow the sport is largely used to buy luxuries for certain members of FIFA and FIFA-affiliated organizations, I would like to see a section discussing the public criticism of the organization. People need to know that not all is right within the organization of self-anointed guardians of world soccer (association football). -- Srwalden (talk) 04:30, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
