Federal republic or United Provinces?[edit]

An anonymous user has edited the article to claim that the accurate title of the state is actually the "United Provinces of Central America". If this is true the article should be moved.

Iota 19:13, 30 Dec 2004 (UTC)

An anonymous user just tried to move the article from its current location to United Provinces of Central America by means of a cut-and-paste. I've reverted this because it's not the proper way to rename an article. The problem with a cut-and-paste is it destroys the edit history. If it is right to move the article then the way to do it is to contact someone with administrator access and ask them to do it for you.

By the way, I don't know much about the subject but why is "United Provinces of Central America" preferable to "Federal Republic of Central America"? If the federation was renamed in 1924 then wasn't it "Federal Republic of Central America" for most of its existence? Iota 02:47, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

By the way, I think the place to go is: Wikipedia:Requested moves. Iota 19:30, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I believe that "United Provinces" is preferable to "Federal Republic" since that name is the most popular (yet correct) form in English and also since that was the state's original name. Other such situations arise, like with Canada. Even though "Canada" is the name used currently, the names "Dominion of Canada" or "Confederation of Canada" were titles used for Canada for much of it's existence, but still the article on Canada is "Canada". In any case, the article title starts out with the name "United Provinces of Central America", so maybe the title should just be the same and when people read the article they will learn more.

Why don't you contact an administrator and request a move?

Yes, I'm pretty sure that Provinces is the correct term, because not only was it the original name, but their reason for using provinces is because they had modeled this country over the Republic of the US. Also, the United states of America are technically provinces also, seeing as the term "state" is reserved for a government that is sovereign and holding a piece of land recognized as a country. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.23.87.30 (talk) 15:32, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

From what I can see it was the provinces was changed to the federation [4] It should therefore be the Federal Republic of Central America. It must be moved because the present term is clearly innaccurate. Favour--SqueakBox 19:53, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)

Requested move 2[edit]

United Provinces of Central AmericaFederal Republic of Central America – Copied from Iota's comments above: The federation was known as the "United Provinces of Central America" only during its first year (1823-1824) but the "Federal Republic of Central America" for the remaining 16 years of its existence (1824-around 1840). FRCA seems to have been its proper, permanent title and UPCA merely a provisional title. Cf. "Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes" is under "Kingdom of Yugoslavia." See other arguments above. -  AjaxSmack  01:08, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Map[edit]

The map used should be edited to not include Belize, which was never part of the country. Nwebster84 (talk) 18:59, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nwebster84 Actually Belize was part of Guatemala. Thinker78 (talk) 01:05, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
While "the territory of Belize has been claimed [by FRCA/Guatemala] in whole or in part since 1821" (emphasis added), it was under British control during that entire period until independence in 1981. "By the time Spain lost control of Mexico and Central America in 1821, Britain had extended its control over the area, albeit informally and unsystematically." See Belizean–Guatemalan_territorial_dispute. Nwebster84 (talk) 22:08, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
