Use of citation template in the "external link section"[edit]

When I changed the External Link to the official Gazzetta Ufficiale web site, I followed the WP:EL guidelines, precisely the ones in the Wikipedia:External_links#References_and_citation section: unfortunately, I saved the changes without giving a proper edit summary, except for the simple typo I found (the "Gazzette" is the plural form for "Gazzetta" and it is used in the official web site only to identify different published issues, not different journals). Reverting my edits on this sole basis seem to me a bit exaggerated, therefore I decided to re-revert and start this discussion thread. Can anyone provide further reasons? :-D Daniele.tampieri (talk) 12:07, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We format references like that, but not external links. Please see the manual of style before reverting. Chrisieboy (talk) 12:29, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I saw it but the same content is also shown in the link Wikipedia:External_links#References_and_citation where, however, it is also clearly stated that there are "Exceptions—websites that can be both references and external links—include any official sites for the article topic, or websites that are specifically devoted to the topic, contain multiple subpages, and meet the above criteria". It seems to me that you weren't aware of that and have read my message too quickly (you also re-reverted keeping the typo :-D ). I want also stress that my intention is not to argue with you about silly things, since we are both wikipedians and editors, but I would like to discuss the apparent discrepancy in the two guidelines: would it be necessary to ask to some admin if it is the case to start a new discussion on the WP:MOS and on the WP:EL talk pages? Please let me know. Best regards Daniele.tampieri (talk) 17:03, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see your point: this is not used a source, it is the official website. We don't use citation templates in the external links section. Chrisieboy (talk) 18:19, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
