Deletion dispute

[edit]

Whilst acknowledging the sentiment expressed in the proposed deletion notice, I would be sorry to see this article deleted. Having been interested in the challenges faced by deaf children for some years, one of my daughter's friends having been completely deaf as a result of illness at a young age, and also being impressed by the achievements of those such as, say, Evelyn Glennie, I was very keen to find out more about the young deaf actress in "The Silence", the first episode of which I have just watched on BBC iPlayer. I am sure there are others, like me, who might be interested, and don't really feel that the article compromises Wikipedia in any way. If biographies of actors and actresses are to be included, such a major achievement by a young deaf actress outranks in my mind say 2, or 3, or whatever the Wikipedia regulations state, performances by a hearing actor.Ninomiya (talk) 20:35, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I absolutely agree with Ninomiya's sentiments. I'm sorry but this deletion notice totally neglects Genevieve's personal achievements and she is a wonderful actor. Is Wikipedia saying that new outstanding actors are not good enough to even have a mention? For whatever happens, Genevieve will achieve well, with or without Wikipedia's interest. As for the "do not be offended" statement, how can you not be offended by this draconian policy. pebbens (talk) 21:09, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you, but I was letting a couple more days go by before removing the notice. In fairness to the (US-based) editor, he is simply saying that one performance doesn't guarantee notability for an actor. However, I am fairly sure that there are (or will be in a couple of days) several published secondary sources that would guarantee notability by a different criteria. I'm also tempted to argue that this is her second major role (anything produced by the BBC/Channel 4 most be to a high enough standard), so the "one recent acting role" is technically incorrect also. If another reliable source that doesn't stem from the BBC press release turns up and can be cited in some form, it'll be fine. Interviews on This Morning for ITV should prove notability too, not to mention the nature of the primetime drama, but they are harder to cite.—User:MDCollins (talk) 21:37, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I'm the editor who put the PROD tag on the article. My tag, as the person above me stated, had nothing to do with personal affiliations or any sort of discrimination. I am respectful of her accomplishments and what she came from. I tagged the article solely because of notability, because one recent acting job, especially if it was only her second and the first was very minor, does not necessarily guarantee notability, regardless of infirmity or background. Since it appears numerous citations have appeared, from several reliable sources, to support the information in the article and establish notability I will not be pursuing Afd. My best to the editors of this article to improve it further. elektrikSHOOS 23:32, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - incidentally, the citations were there before you added the tag!—User:MDCollins (talk) 23:39, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I will tag the article with cleanup tags and I'll be keeping this page on my watchlist for future help if needed. elektrikSHOOS 23:41, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As a suggestion, one of the main reasons I doubted the subject's notability is because the article for the show she stars in does not exist. I'd suggest someone get make that promptly. elektrikSHOOS 23:43, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
