Genealogical Information

[edit]

William de Mandeville, earl Geoffrey's father, was dead at the time of a charter issued by King Henry I at the Tower of London in May, 1116; Hollister, "Misfortunes of the Mandevilles." DeAragon 06:08, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Geoffrey's eldest son Ernulf/Arnulf was older, probably much older, than Geoffrey III, and therefore not a product of the earl's marriage to Rohese de Vere. That couple married no earlier than 1130 and probably around 1133, and their eldest son would therefore have been no older than 10 when the earl rebelled in 1143. While the earl clearly acknowledged Ernulf, Ernulf's illegitimacy would explain why Geoffrey III inherited the earl's lands and title. DeAragon 22:57, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Empress Matilda

[edit]

I think it would be helpful if this article briefly explained that Empress Matilda was also known as Maude and that the references in this article are to her, not to Stephen's wife, also called Matilda. Otherwise it's confusing for those, like me, who aren't experts in this part of history. At least in the books I've read the Empress generally goes by the name Maude, so Matilda with no explanation is unnecessarily confusing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:2:8180:F300:21E:C2FF:FEBB:8696 (talk) 20:09, 15 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Matilda was what the empress was called in contemporary sources. The alternative Maude/Maud for Matilda is a later usage. I will clarify the empress/queen confusion, but the cross-references in the article are to the correct individuals.DeAragon 07:21, 29 January 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dearagon (talkcontribs)

Burial

[edit]

The text says 'Because he had died excommunicate, his body was denied burial... He was buried in the Temple Church ...' Can the contradiction be resolved/clarified? Jackiespeel (talk) 09:35, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

He was initially denied burial and the tradition is that his body was encased in a lead sheet and hung from a tree. His son arranged for his burial by the Templars.DeAragon 07:51, 7 February 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dearagon (talkcontribs)
