Previously this page listed the HMCS Niobe as the first ship of the Royal Canadian Navy, being commissioned on September 6, 1910. This date is correct, as verified here [1] on page 138. However, according to that same document, the HMCS Rainbow was actually commissioned one month and two days before that, on August 4, 1910. That can be verified on page 142. This document is the official history of the naval service of Canada, as published under the authority of the Minister of National Defence at the time.

HMCS Niobe was also used as a shore establishment during the Second World War and a shore establishment/secondary name of the UK-based Canadian naval attache until 1965.
