Stands[edit]

The sponsorship of each stand (except the South Stand) was quite out of date, so I have updated them today to reflect the new sponsors (ASD Lighting, Carlsberg Lager and www.MySheffieldJobs.co.uk). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.38.202.151 (talk) 18:19, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed the photograph of the North Stand to a more up-to-date version from this last year. Also added The North West Terrace as it's own section and added a current photograph with some further information. Deejayone (talk | stalk) 11:13, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You call the North West Terrace "The Crows Nest" thats fine but I remember it being called "The Triangle" in the 1970s when Wednesday fans were allowed to stand there, obviously due to its shape of an inverted triangle. Mick Knapton (talk) 10:27, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The crow's nest is the area of the kop which juts out around one of the roof supports adjacent to the north stand, which looks (a little bit) like a ship's crow's nest - have deleted the reference —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.118.28.67 (talk) 06:57, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nicknames[edit]

Several nicknames have been added to this article within the past few days. These include Hillybo, The Owls nest, The Aviary and Owlerton. Whilst I accept that Owlerton is the old name for the ground, I have never heard Hillsborough being referred to as Owlerton in modern times. Similarly I have not heard any of the other nicknames listed. I could be wrong; if so please add a reference to the edits, otherwise I will keep reverting them.

Cheers Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 17:31, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not aware of any of these nicknames. Indeed, Owlerton is a common name for the Sheffield Sports Stadium. L.J.Skinnerwot|I did 14:32, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hillsborough Disaster[edit]

Shouldn't the introductory paragraph mention the Hillsborough Disaster? That's the event most indissolubly connected with the ground for most people. Gunstar hero 10:37, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's exactly what I thought upon visiting the page. It's almost disgraceful. Kelestar 14:57, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Added. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 12:14, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

North West Terrace[edit]

As far as I am aware, the North west corner of the ground is closed due to Health and Safety. It was certainly empty when I was there for the Derby - surely when it's most likely to be full? L.J.Skinnerwot|I did 11:20, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I am aware it is not officially "closed", however the police do not like it to be used for "high-risk" games such as the Steel City derby. If you can find a citation saying that it is permanently closed then feel free to add a sentence, but I suspect that you won't be able to. Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 19:28, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's quite plausible Dan, thanks. Can anyone confirm that the terrace has definitely been used this season? L.J.Skinnerwot|I did 12:18, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Again, as far as I am aware, it has not been used this season. As it is uncovered it is only used as a last resort to hold away fans when large attendances are expected. At present the only matches that are likely to attract away followings large enough to warrant using the stand are derby matches and as the police deem these to be high-risk the stand has not been used for some time. I am not aware of any ruling or decision that states that it is officially closed though... Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 16:34, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am aware of it being closed a few seasons ago due to not having a safety certificate - this was confirmed recently by John Hemmingham, former Chief Executive of The Owls Trust at a Wednesdayite meeting, stating that when the Owls Trust had offices in Hillsborough they were made aware of a large crack in the structure which ran up the length of the stairs, apparently. I understand the Owls Trust were approached to help with costs to repair, but the project was put back due to falling attendances meaning the corner would not be used. There is no public citation as far as I am aware though, I cannot see the sentence being challenged, however.Deejayone (talk | stalk) 11:13, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Naming of stadium[edit]

Seems odd to say it was named after the constituency; surely both the stadium and constituency were named after the neighbourhood? --VinceBowdren (talk) 00:43, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I take it back; that is what the source says. --VinceBowdren (talk) 00:47, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As stated in the article, the stadium is actually in Owlerton, Hillsborough is slightly further south. However as Owlerton is part of the Hillsborough constituency they took the name for the stadium when it was renamed. Dan1980 (talk | stalk) —Preceding comment was added at 00:51, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As I recall, the stadium used to be named Owlerton, but on the old Sheffield tramway had stops named both Hillsborough and Owlerton, and the Hillsborough stop was considerably closer than the Owlerton stop, so it was renamed (in part at least) to aid travelling supporters. L.J.Skinnerwot|I did 17:29, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've heard that before somewhere Lewis, but the official line is that it was renamed to coincide with Owlerton becoming part of the Hillsborough constituency. Dan1980 (talk ♦ stalk) 17:44, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  2. Requires copy-edit for WP:MOS

I would think a small amount of work and it could be ready for GA submission.
