Merge with contravallation[edit]

I have just written an article called investment (military), Perhaps all three articles should be merged together. But I am equally happy for them to remain separate articles --Philip Baird Shearer 09:24, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

having thought about it I have decided to merge them both into investment (military) --Philip Baird Shearer 13:45, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Siege[edit]

Isn't "investment" simply an archaic term for "siege"? If there is a distinction between the two, please indicate what that is.77Mike77 (talk) 14:30, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OED besiege To sit down before (a town, castle, etc.) with armed forces in order to capture it; to lay siege to, beleaguer, invest.
OED invest: To enclose or hem in with a hostile force, so as to cut off approach or escape; to lay siege to; to besiege, beleaguer;
I.e. invest is a specific form of besieging where (as this article describes) the town or fortress is completely enveloped. There are other types of besieging where the town or fortress is not invested. To see an example of where both were tactics were used see the article siege of Basing House -- PBS (talk) 20:35, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
