Did You Know

Afact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on December 14, 2020.

The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that King Ludwig Oak (pictured) is a natural monument named after its admirer, Ludwig I of Bavaria?

Which English?[edit]

I have been impressed by all Twofingered Typist's recent work here. I am in unconditional agreement with very roughly 93.76% of it, including some excellent and very necessary sorting-out of a few bits of not-quite-English. What I don't understand, and I may have simply missed the point, is why it has been tagged and converted to BrE. I had thought – well, I seem to remember thinking it (almost the same thing) – that I'd noticed it had started in AmE, and I'd decided to leave well alone. So why the BrE swap? And yes, I may have missed the memo or not noticed something which is staring me in the face, so please let me down gently if at all here. Best to all, DBaK (talk) 17:08, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DBaK: My bad. I probably shouldn't have tagged the article but "meter" got to me. (Even then, I missed some of them which I've now fixed.) Generally, my unscientific method is if the first word I come across that can be spelled Br/Amer then I tag the article based on the spelling used. That generally works well. Cheers, Twofingered Typist (talk) 19:07, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
OK, well, I'm probably missing the point as I so often am but it looks to me as if the initial version was in AmE and there was still plenty of it up to 25 December, the last version before you started. So, to be honest, it does look a bit like a hijack from AmE into BrE. That said, I'm not sure that I have the stomach for a huge fight, so I will wish you a pleasant evening, or whatever it is in your time zone, and bid this farewell for now. Best wishes DBaK (talk) 22:12, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Update: I know I said I'd shut up and go away, and I promise that I shortly will, but I just wanted to add, Twofingered Typist, that if you're going for consistency there are still several AmE spellings that I am sure you will want to change. Cheers DBaK (talk) 22:47, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
DBaK Last word. I remember now having gone through the article looking for overlooked instances of AmE that I added the BrE tag when I came across "recognised" in the first sentence of the lede when I began my copy edit. Stay safe. Twofingered Typist (talk) 15:03, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Overall, there appears to be some comprehensive sourcing especially in History, but the organisation of the text has space to improve and there are a couple of questions the text raises that might be able to be answered. Closing this as the nominator seems to have retired, but I hope someone else can pick it up. CMD (talk) 14:26, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello CMD and thank you for the review, which I realize has been closed. I have had the article bookmarked for the past year and I will now have the time to work on it. I hope you don't mind me leaving brief notes in response to your points, indicating how I addressed the issues; because it will be hard to keep a mental note of what I have worked on — and this will take me a few weeks to wrap up. I just wanted to check with you first if you will be okay with me using this review page to track my progress. — The Most Comfortable Chair 22:08, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have an objection to making notes here if you feel it will assist with demonstrating improvements in a new GAN. CMD (talk) 03:05, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
