Actually, as this article is now, it should probably be split in two: one article for LAMU and one article for the LAMU ARHIPELAGO. Does anybody else have a view about this?
Also: About the inf. on the page that Lamu was a center for the slave trade: how accurate is that?? Zanzibar was, sure, but Lamu? According to Romero and others the slave trade there, I believe, was mostly for "domestic consumption", i.e. the main exports from Lamu was other goods (e.g. ivory, and later: mangrove poles.) Because the article isn't about the archipelago, the archipelago is linked in the intro and that article and the others have the template, and what with the UNESCO box too it looked too long and bloated. It looks very 2005 to me, I think it would be better off as a footer nav template than a side bar.♦ Dr. Blofeld21:44, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I completely disagree (and not only because I started the template). This is the main place in the archipelago: I would assume it to be the starting point of "exploring" the island-articles on wikipedia. (as it is "in real life" (yeah: I have been there).) If the article looks to bloated, then I would suggest that we remove some pictures. I would not mind seeing the template change, though: a footer nav template might be better. I havent worked on these articles for years; but trust me: they were a complete mess before I started. That template was rather essential, in getting people to understand the difference between Lamu, Lamu Island, and Lamu Archipelago. People mixed them up all the time, so you saw the UNESCO box on Lamu Island instead of Lamu, etc. Cheers, Huldra (talk) 22:02, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Rather unusual to have somebody even notice my editing of an African article! I'm not disputing the use of having the template, I just don't think it helps the article layout and appearance as a side bar. I wouldn't mind so much if the UNESCO box wasn't there but the two of them in the article stood out as untidy to me. I'll refactor it to a footer template tomorrow and readd it to the article if this is OK with you..♦ Dr. Blofeld22:43, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hah! Check who is the major contributor on most of the articles in Lamu archipelago..... (though I have hardly edited them for years, they were my first "major" project). And just in the little editing I have done here this evening have made me miss the template on Lamu. Re-adding it as a footer template is fine with me. Done. LOL did you catch a boat down the Nile or something and end up there, it's a long way from Palestine! Hope that's OK, I've put it at default open to make it more accessible. Really all of those links should be blue. The World Heritage Site link needs to point to something.I think I'll add a landmarks section and start the fort and mosque tomorrow.♦ Dr. Blofeld23:00, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, caught a plane to Nairobi (or, as we called it: Nairobbery), then out to Lamu. Spend about two months there, goofing around the islands.....ah. I have friends who go there most winters, alas, it has become quite dangerous now. I had an absolute dream weak up at Kiwayu; one mile beach, all for yourself.....now I could never go back: too close to Somalia: they have kidnapped Mzungus from the area. Sigh. Oh: and the template looks fine: I prefer default open. Cheers, Huldra (talk) 23:31, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
