@XdelaTorre: (et.al): I see that since last October you have been putting a great deal of work into‐ the page, with ≈50 edits (a lot of good work btw). The page has grown in that time; prior to the first of those edits, the page was ≈67Kb. Since then you've added ≈245Kb, and along with some other editors, the page is now a hefty 308Kb.
My first suggestion would be all the UAVs and other versions of remote-piloted and automatically operated ships, which currently adds up to about 60Kb.
Next would be all the decommissioned ships, which add up to about 27Kb.
Perhap then rename the article to "List of active ships of the People's Liberation Army Navy"...? (thoughts?)
Perhaps some other ideas for changes will present later on.
There are some other issues I wanted to ask about, since you are actively working on and building up the content on this page. I realize that you aren't responsible for everything on the page, just the same I'd like your feedback, (and that of other editors as well);
The use of "active" and active" (among others). What's your thoughts? Is there perhaps a clearer way to denote the status of a ship? (I asked about this years ago but never got a response)
The use of US Navy hull classifications. Afaik, the PLAN doesn't use these. This was brought up before, by Tupsumato, with replies from Kendall-K1 and Antiochus the Great. Imo, they shouldn't be used, which seems to be the brief consensus up above. I also believe this was brought up before, and consensus was the same then (I'll have a look around to see if I can find any links for that).
What is the story with the "Chinese Naval Registry"? Do you, or anyone else know anything about it? It's mentioned or noted a couple dozen times on the page, but there's apparently nothing else to support it, including the refs. (Two of the prose mentions had the Chinese Naval Registry wiki-linked to the Naval Vessel Register, which is specifically for US Navy ships.) I also had a quick look through Google, but didn't see anything. If anyone can provide any more info, that would be appreciated. Otherwise, as it stands right now, I believe all mention should probably be removed.
Next question is aimed (I believe) mostly at the UAV entries, so XdelaTorre will hopefully have the answers here. Are they all Chinese military equipment? (Owned & operated, active, etc.?) Just skimming through some entries, it appears some were made overseas and used by Chinese civilian companies, universites, other non-military gov't agencies. I believe I saw one that is US made and I'm not sure there was any mention of China, and another one was only a proposed prototype. (I see these same issues were asked about some time ago at Talk:List of unmanned aerial vehicles of China#Suggestions, by DASonnenfeld.) Have all these entries been thoroughly checked?
Final item is relatively minor, but there are a lot of question marks (?) throughout the tables. I don't recall if there is any guildline, MOS direction or even an essay on this, but I do know that it's virtually never used this way, (it looks wrong for an encyclopaedia, imo), better to use "n/a", "tba" or "tbd", or leave the cell blank. (There a many blank cells right now as well, btw). There's almost 1000 question marks. First would be to agree to remove them, then how to go about it.
Easy things to support: splitting off decommissioned ships and adding "active" to this article (as customary with other navies), splitting off AUVs/UAVs/whatnot to a separate article (not really a specialist in this field), and removing US Navy hull classifications (as per my earlier discussion five years ago). I respectfully insist on keeping the title List of ships of the People's Liberation Army Navy unchanged, and respectfully suggest to split the article as follows if everyone insists on splitting the article:
1). Under the section of Decommissioned Ships, replace everything there with a link to a newly created article titled List of decommissioned ships of the People's Liberation Army Navy, and migrate everything within the section to the new article.
2). Similarly, under the section of Submarines, replace all tables/lists there with a link to a newly created article titled List of active submarines of the People's Liberation Army Navy, and migrate all tables/lists within the section to the new article.
3). Under the section of Surface ships, replace all tables/lists there with a link to a newly created article titled List of active surface combatants of the People's Liberation Army Navy and migrate all tables/lists within the section to the new article.
4). Under the section of Auxiliaries, replace all tables/lists there with a link to a newly created article titled List of active naval auxiliaries of the People's Liberation Army Navy and migrate all tables/lists within the section to the new article.
5). Within the newly created article titled List of active naval auxiliaries of the People's Liberation Army Navy, under the section of Unmanned underwater vehicles, replace all tables/lists there with a link to a newly created article titled List of active unmanned underwater vehicles of the People's Liberation Army Navy and migrate all tables/lists within the section to the new article.
As for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV), as said in the article, it's standard Chinese military practice to outsource construction and logistic tasks/projects to civilian contractors to reduce cost, and this is why civilian owned UUVs are included in the article, and although rare, UUVs deployed by Chinese civilian firms/governmental agencies are not solely limited to those domestically built in China, some foreign UUVs have been purchased by Chinese have been deployed to support Chinese military projects when outsourced.
The phrase Chinese naval registry is used in the article is merely a phrase used to reference the list of ships kept by Chinese military, but besides its existence, very little public info is released and I cannot find any. If other contributor can find more precise info, they are more than welcomed to make update.
In regard to the Question mark, it is the result of unable to find some official info such as year entering service & tonnage, so you are welcomed to replace the question mark with unavailable, unknown, or other verbiage. XdeLaTorre (talk) 00:01, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
