In the description of the activities is named "...as well as the so-called "Active Measures" (distributing false intelligence)...". As to my knowledge, this (spreading desinformation) was only a small fraction of the 'Active Measures'. Actually, AM was simply the term for Covert operations in general, meaning every secretly conducted operation - which, by the way, funnily does not appear at all in the paragraph, though it was an important field of work for the HVA. Ok, why not look into Active measures? Definition: "...ranged from media manipulations to special actions involving various degrees of violence. (...) They included disinformation, propaganda, counterfeiting official documents, assassinations, and political repression, such as penetration in churches, and persecution of political dissidents." The BStU's website offers the translation "Main Directorate for Reconnaissance" here. Unless someone else has a more authoritative source, I will use this. As an aside, they also spell "HVA" as "HV A" but I think adding spaces to acronyms would sacrifice clarity.-Ich (talk) 14:38, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
Also, when googling for both terms, I find a lot more using "Main Reconnaissance Administration", a handful of which would be considered reliable, or are (likely) directly influenced by the fact that Wikipedia used this translation. I feel most comfortable using the translation offered by a German federal agency that is responsible for maintaining the Stasi's records.-Ich (talk) 14:53, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The opening section of this article has a sentence copied verbatim from the source it cites, which is "It provided up to 80 percent of all information about NATO countries before the Warsaw Pact, according to the CIA." But the Warsaw Pact predates the HVA by quite a few months. Is this quote complete rubbish, or does it "before" changing to e.g. "to"?
