It should be added to his page that he became only the seventh player to be intentionally walked with the bases loaded. He did so tonight(4/24/09) against the Rockies at Coors Field. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rhettd (talkcontribs) 04:22, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Boston POV

[edit]

The "Manny Being Manny" section of this article is downright awful, and it's clearly been written from the perspective of a Boston Red Sox fan. Labelling incidents as "the final straw" and saying things like "led Red Sox nation to demand the deportation of number 24" is ridiculously POV and should be deleted or edited. Also, Red Sox nation is solely a creation of the media and Boston fans and isn't an actual entity or physical reality.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.247.254.119 (talkcontribs)

I'm inclined to delete the whole section... the relevant parts are already covered in the "personality" section and this whole list of incidents is really not needed. Spanneraol (talk) 18:11, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, Are you saying that even though I'm a member of Red Sox Nation I still have to pay taxes to the U.S. Government. That just doesn't seem right. Seriously though I'm not a fan of that section. IMHO if it's an important enough incident it should be incorporated into the section covering the season it occured.--Cube lurker (talk) 18:24, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for that. Can you please make one more POV edit:

"On July 18, 2005, Ramirez disappeared into the "Green Monster" during a visit to the mound by pitching coach Dave Wallace with two outs in the top of the 6th inning. When pitcher Wade Miller[29] was ready to resume pitching, Ramirez was nowhere to be found. It is suggested he went to urinate or even defecate, but there are no toilet facilities inside the scoreboard area. Manny has returned to the wall several times since during pitching changes, but has always returned on time. Ramirez also was seen playing left field at Fenway with a water bottle in his back pocket.[30][31]"

This is just nonsense, which he's explained many, many times. He went into the wall to hang out with the scoreboard guys and take a break from the crowd noise and hot sun. It isn't that hard to understand.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.23.17.94 (talk) 16:49, 7 March 2009

"Manny Being Manny"

[edit]
Such a major sourced section should not have been removed without discussion. I've since restored it. --Oakshade (talk) 18:20, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There was discussion about it. The section is way too long, contains mostly random assortments of events and really doesn't belong in the article. Spanneraol (talk) 18:24, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Where's the discussion? --Oakshade (talk) 18:36, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind. I see the discussion in the "Boston POV" section above. --Oakshade (talk) 18:40, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the proposal was consensus against move. As demonstrated and without rebutting evidence, in keeping with Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English), the common spelling of his surname in multiple, reliable, English language sources is without the diacritic mark.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:41, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    HCG and other things

    [edit]

I'm not a big fan of the current way the wiki deals with this. His suspension and basic information, which can be distilled into a sentence or two, should be found in the intro. Further, the information given here is shoddy. Manny was busted for having actually used steroids AND using HCG. They knew he was using steroids because of the his hormone ratios. So his suspension is not exlusively about HCG. That's just the one they have a paper trial to. Anyway, the intro should cover this latest controversy.66.190.29.150 (talk) 22:26, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It should not be included in the intro at this point because so much of the information is speculative right now. The article handles the info correctly with factual information. He was not "busted" for steroids. He was suspended because he had used a banned substance, HCG. The other stuff is all just speculation right now and doesn't belong in the article until factual information is released. Spanneraol (talk) 23:06, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You obviously don't know the issues involed here. Ramirez's positive test came this season. It was of concern because his ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone, another naturally occurring hormone, exceeded 4 to 1, a source familiar with the case told The Chronicle. Under baseball's testing rules, that result is proof of steroid use. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/05/07/SPUU17GJQ3.DTL —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.190.29.150 (talk) 23:23, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That is not proof of anything...and none of this has been confirmed by reliable sources. Spanneraol (talk) 14:54, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am really surprised that they didn't bother including why these drugs are actually given to individuals. The way it acts on adipose tissue alone is very interesting, and without the release of the medical records there is no way of knowing for sure what was going on. I am not suggesting that he was taking these for adipose tissue disorders, though that is my sub specialty. My point is that without the release of those medical records I think the wiki should not go about just assuming they know something. As far as I know a wiki is for documenting information, not assuming things. Aside from those issues I would say that a typical male of his age suffering from premature lowering of testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone. I am not suggesting anyone has that, merely stating that if it was the case it would explain why a physician would prescribe this. It would also explain why he went to a private physician instead of one provided by the team. Again I am not saying any of that is true, and without medical reports and tests none of us will ever know. According to HIPPA that won't be happening anytime, so for now I think it is best to only document things that can be actually proven and not assume things. 76.123.149.130 (talk) 17:15, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Like I said when this news first broke, steroids were implicated: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-manny-hgc15-2009may15,0,5088726.story http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4159870 I guess the LA Times, ESPN and the SF Chronical aren't good enough for wikepedia's standards. Even though he was only suspended for the use HCG without an MLB "ok" to use the drugs he was also found to have had elevated and synthetic testosrone levels. Synthetic testosterone = taking steroids = manny took steroids.66.190.29.150 (talk) 11:56, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Speculation by newspaper reporters is still just speculation.. not facts. Spanneraol (talk) 14:20, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There is nothing speculative regarding the statements "had synthetic testosterone in his body when he was tested this past spring." and "the test revealed the testosterone was synthetic". Nothing at all.66.190.29.150 (talk) 15:14, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Beside many primarily(all?) stylistic changes, I have split one sentence in the lead, in order separately to attribute the link between hCG and steroid cycling to dealer Victor Conte; and to the LAtimes article (ref name="Suspended"). I didn't find the link to steroids in the NYtimes article previously cited alone in the lead. As I write the crucial references are numbers 4, 5, 35.
Maybe Conte and the hCG-steroid link should be in section 2009, not in the lead. At the moment I have no reliable judgment about that. --P64 (talk) 16:37, 9 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Promotion?

    [edit]

"Ramirez' authorized biography, Becoming Manny: Inside the Life of Baseball's Most Enigmatic Slugger was released in bookstores March 10, 2009." I'd suggest removing the phrase alltogether, due to its irrelevance in the article (particularly as every major sports player has an autobiography nowadays). The article is protected, so if anyone with the power wants to remove the lign, go ahead. French Connections (talk) 18:41, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Manny's suspension

    [edit]

The page should be updated from the vague 'he also was scheduled to play a few games in the minors prior to rejoining the active roster' to the more accurate 'Manny played two games at AAA Albuquerque and is scheduled to play four games with Class A Lake Elsinore before rejoining the Dodgers.

Updated the info... though the article is incorrect.. he is going to be playing with the Inland Empire 66ers next... they have a game at Lake Elsinor on saturday and then have a home stand against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Spanneraol (talk) 16:26, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Edit request from Drguillen13, 30 August 2010

    [edit]

{{editsemiprotected}} Manny Ramirez was claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox. As of today (August 30, 2010) he no longer plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Chicago White Sox will pay the remaining $4.2 million of his contract as he plays out the rest of the year in Chicago.

    Drguillen13 (talk) 17:07, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Dodgers' roster, the transaction isn't official yet. According to the MLB.com story about it, he will become a Chicago White Sox (White Sock?) later today. I added a piece about the waiver claim to the article, but his team should remain listed as the Dodgers until the claim is official. --Muboshgu (talk) 17:23, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Allowing is not the same as asking for. Without the accent mark, it sounds differently (OK, that does not happen in English, but that is because you don't know how or why). He is a Latin American person. If he was back in his country, he should use the accent mark, and if he does not, he would be commiting a misspelling. Spanish is a regulated language, unless English, that's why you are not used to these reasons. I work in newsrooms and I would be surprised if I found many NYT reporters who can explain me why this surname changes pronunciation without the accent mark. But I see I'm in minority here, so if you want to have it wrong, have it. Againme (talk) 04:20, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
He grew up in New York... this is his country. Spanneraol (talk) 04:26, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you mean, but I was refering to his country of birth. See, your name is first registered in the country where you were born. Againme (talk) 04:38, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That isn't really relevant per WP:OFFICIALNAMES. (I won't even go into the fact that there is no evidence or citation of his "birth registration" given here.) Ramirez is known almost exclusively for actions in the US and his name is used there without an accent. Bill Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe III and is legally William Jefferson Clinton but the article is not at either of those titles per WP:UCN. —  AjaxSmack  03:07, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Prose tag

    [edit]

I propose that the solution to the {{prose}} tag in the "Off the Field" section is to give the list a prose lead. The information already in that list works in list format, but it could use a section intro. Jorgath (talk) 23:08, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and I don't have time to write it right now, but if no one has written it by the time I find some time, I'll give it a shot. Jorgath (talk) 23:14, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Intro

    [edit]

I find it very sad that he was one of the greatest hitters ever and the majority of his intro is about PEDs. There is way too much information about the PEDs in the intro, the majority of which can be shifted down to the actual section of the article that talks about that. Sounds more like a slanderous hate article then an "encyclopedic" supposedly non-biased article. That being said, I have my doubts that anything will change. In the 2009 controlled substance scandal, You should insert the names of the identified doctors that contriobuted to the situation (Dr. Pedro Bosch and his son Anthony P Bosch). Both were identifed by ESPN, YAHOO and every other major news source. Both are again currently under investigation for providing PEDs to Alex Rodriguez, Melky Caberrera and Paul Braun, and MLB stars.

I am doing this review per request. But give me a few days however, as I still got 2 more GA reviews to finish and this will be an extremely detailed review. Thanks Secret account 02:39, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Perfect. My semester ends Friday, so I have some exams to take throughout this week. Thanks for your willingness to review this, Secret. Sportsguy17 (TC) 02:41, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well I did a quick glance though it and I see major problems with the article.... it needs some massive expansion, hardly anything written about him on his Cleveland days, eight seasons into barely three paragraphs!! Playoff heroics and World Series into one paragraph!!! very statsy, nothing on his playing style or his popularity with fans outside a two sentence "personality" section, multiple dead links, and so forth. This is going to be a fail unless you want me to go though how to proceed with this article for a chance to pass GA in the future. Secret account 03:12, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In that case, I request to withdraw to make improvements without a GAR hanging over my head. Too much work is needed still. Sorry. Sportsguy17 (TC) 01:53, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Manny being Manny

    [edit]

    Hey guys,

So I think the Personality section would be good if it focused primarily on "Manny being Manny", which it is intended to. However, I'm stuck on what to include, so if any baseball editor could help me out, that would be great. I'm pinging, Go Phightins! and EricEnfermero for help, but any suggestions from anyone are welcomed. Thanks, Sportsguy17 (TC) 03:34, 1 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No strong opinion, but I'd favor keeping that type of material under the Personal life section, as I think that WP:CRITS is a consideration. Much of the current personal life stuff is redundant to the early life info. EricEnfermero (Talk) 03:54, 1 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
EricEnfermero I agree. I think the Personal Life and Personality sections should be merged. My biggest issue was the "Manny being Manny" moments. There are so many of them, but I'm just not sure which moments to include (i.e I'm not sure which moments would be considered notable and which ones wouldn't). Sportsguy17 (TC) 04:17, 1 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That stuff was originally in the article and was removed (see discussions above)... primarily because it just became a section of loosely associated trivia.. I don't know if its necessary to add a bunch of that stuff to the article. Spanneraol (talk) 04:42, 1 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to concur with that. Plus, the references I've provided offer plenty of "Manny being Manny" moments. Thanks for the opinions all. Sportsguy17 (TC) 04:44, 1 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be glad to take a look at this. I notice that SG17 has been away from WP for an extended period and I don't know if he plans to return. With that in mind, I'll leave some initial feedback. If anyone responds to it in the next few days, we'll continue the review. If not, we can close the review until there is an active nominator. EricEnfermero (Talk) 02:38, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Initial checks

    [edit]

Let's start there and see what response we get. If this feedback is addressed, we can move to a section-by-section look at the prose. Thanks, everyone, for a lot of work on the expansion of this entry. EricEnfermero (Talk) 04:26, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

EricEnfermero, thanks for taking up this review and good to see you again. I've been really busy in real life lately and haven't really had time to edit, but I heard via email that you had responded to the GAN, so I thought I'd take a look. I have exams today and tomorrow, so I'll address feedback this weekend. Good to see you again and thanks for taking up this review. Sportsguy17 (TC) 02:35, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Good to see you as well. No hurry here. I will be on vacation in Mexico starting Friday, but I will return by the middle of next week. EricEnfermero (Talk) 03:04, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Will make the appropriate changes this weekend. Sportsguy17 (TC) 12:43, 3 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I forgot that I had this open, but I hope to continue the feedback by this weekend. EricEnfermero (Talk) 11:42, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    • Still two links showing up as dead. One is currently ref 119; the other I am looking for, but it's from SOSHwiki, which probably isn't a good source to use anyway. I'll leave some more feedback this week, but so far things look pretty good. As a popular modern player, Ramirez has a well-documented article, so my remaining suggestions might just be prose issues, but I'll take a closer look this week. EricEnfermero (Talk) 12:29, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • Once I am back at a desktop and can use checklinks more easily, I will replace the link for ref 119. As for SOSHwiki, it's an external link and it doesn't appear to be of much use, so perhaps removing it isn't a bad option. Sportsguy17 (TC) 01:34, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@EricEnfermero: All appears to be complete. I expanded the Early Life section based on the NY Times article by Rimer. I'm not sure if what I added was what you were looking for, so feel free to add, delete, or correct anything. Also, thank you very much for doing this review. I appreciate your feedback and getting to work with you. Sportsguy17 (TC) 02:16, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Manny Jr.

    [edit]

The section on his personal life notes that his son, Manny Jr., plays for a minor league team in New Britain, CT, as of 2018. Currently he plays for the Brockton Rox of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League of New England. (http://baseball.pointstreak.com/player.html?playerid=1577314&seasonid=33288). I don't really feel well enough versed in editing and properly formatting citations to make that update, but I wanted to point it out in case someone else will. 12.132.105.50 (talk) 13:48, 29 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
