Alleged first matrimony[edit]

This article currently contains the following statement:
"Maria Teresa was married by proxy on 10 November 1734 to Eugenio Giovanni Francesco of Savoy, a grandson of Prince Louis Thomas of Savoy-Carignan. However, as Eugenio died only thirteen days later, the couple never met and the marriage was annulled on the grounds of it never having been consummated.[1][better source needed]"
Originally unsourced, this statement was recently provided with a sourcebyUser:Dialuanny0 by referring to the page on Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina in the Unofficial Royalty website. However, since the latter in turn refers to Wikipedia as its source, it cannot be considered reliable in this case.
As many sources as I have been able to find, none reports any mention of a marriage by proxy in 1734 (Maria Teresa was 9 and, as a child not having reached puberty, she was not even permitted to marry according to canon law) and, even less, of the annulment of a marriage that was never celebrated. Also, the couple had in fact already met during a visit the young betrothed paid to his little fiancée and her mother.
The marriage agreements had been signed on 2 May 1732 in Vienna where the powerful great-uncle of the Count of Soissons, Prince Eugene of Savoy, resided. He was very attached to the only male descendant of his collateral family line and aimed to establish through him a second Savoy state in Central Italy, having obtained the approval of Emperor Charles VI and the King of Sardinia Charles Emmanuel III, head of the House of Savoy.
I wish to communicate this post to User:Iamthecheese44 who previously edited the article.
In the absence of opinions to the contrary, I will edit the above statement, in accordance with the following sources:
