Untitled[edit]

Additional sources:

There is also a book on the cemeteries of Coles County, entitled The Prairie Sleeps, which contains several notable historical tidbits and is much more readable than the "official" county history. Wachholder0 18:09, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Debatable[edit]

It is very clear that Mattoon was not a Lincoln-Douglas debate town. Every source I can find says the debate happened in Charleston, Illinois. Even the linked-to transcript of the debate says "Charleston" at the top in enormous letters. Fishal 04:13, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

And a soybean[edit]

Hey folks -- please beware of people trying to add information regarding a soybean museum. This information was added as a hoax, and it was propagated by journalists who relied on the Wikipedia article without fact-checking. The museum URL is soybeanmuseum.org, and the site contains this disclaimer at the bottom: This site and all images herin property of the Coles County Soybean Museum, a non-existent entity. This site is meant as a joke, poking fun at silly journalists who use Wikipedia as their only source of information and don't check their facts. All soybean information on this site comes directly from Wikipedia. We don't check our sources either. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.68.113.173 (talk) 12:14, 17 March 2008 (UTC) [reply]

Fabrication & Edwards[edit]

I have never personally set foot in Mattoon, but having worked for many months with about a dozen skilled tradesmen and women who all hailed from there, I am surprised that there is not more mention of light manufacturing. The plants have closed and moved away. I get that. But my understanding is that there were many, and they strongly affected the character of the town, the pace and flavor of life there, and of its people. I don't see much mention in the history of the town. Not to criticise, just SUGGESTING.

Also, no mention of a pioneer of radio and tv broadcasting: Frank Edwards, born and raised in Mattoon, may be the earliest documentable professional radio announcer, the first to be syndicated nationwide. A contemporary of Edward R. Murrow, his article says he was employed by about 1923, aged 15! He is hardly remembered today, but he was a big deal in the 1940's & 50's.
