Down Syndrome?[edit]

I don't believe this word means Down's Syndrome, of which mong is a slang word for from the former (though in some areas still in use) scientific name for it, "mongoloid".

Please provide evidence in the form of a credible reference, or remove that entry. Cheers. Hebrides (talk) 22:10, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In the absence of any response, I am removing this unsubstantiated entry. Hebrides (talk) 21:24, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I didin't think that Wikipedia's encyclopedic content was supposed to be restricted by political correctness. The term 'mongol' was historically used to refer to people with Down's Syndrome. It wasn't supposed to be offensive at the time. It was believed that those with Down's Syndrome shared physical characteristics with the Mongoloid race.
Here's some sources:
"The term "mongol" refers to "mongoloids", a label used in the past for people with Down's syndrome" - http://www.bbc.co.uk/ouch/opinion/pyjama_girl_and_the_national_outcry.shtml
Mongolism - http://dictionary.infoplease.com/mongolism
Mongoloid - http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/mongoloid?qsrc=2446
This is from about 2 minutes of searching on Google. I'm sure that if I spent a bit more time, I would find loads more. I'm not saying I like the word. But this is an Encylopedia. If someone wants to know the meaning of the word and where it came from, then they should be able to find out. Zestos (talk) 15:08, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
