Portrait of Genepil

[edit]

The main header photo for the Mongolian people's Wiki page claims to show the Queen consort Genepil in 1923. This however is likely not her, and there seems to be no known photograph of Genepil around. The photograph first appeared in a National Geographic magazine article published in 1921. The photo is titled "A Mongolian woman sits for her portrait before a Chinese photographer" by Luther Anderson. Here is a source describing it.[1]

I'm happy to keep the photo as I think it's a very nice picture, but we should retitle it on the main page perhaps using the original title or some variant rather than misattributing her identity. However, as the article is semi-protected, I can't edit it, so I hope another Wikipedian comes along to rectify the issue! Regards, Andrew S. edit east-Asian to North-Asian because Mongolians are neither east or central Asian. 66.181.182.111 (talk) 13:16, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Editing conflict.

@Juihui and Super Dromaeosaurus: please discuss here instead of in edit summaries. That way, you can both provide sources for your arguments. Thank you. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 23:58, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Doctored photo incorrectly used

[edit]

The main image used for this article has been doctored, with another person's face photoshopped on top. It is not the same as the cited source.

I've taken the liberty of uploading the actual, real, unaltered photo (I've supplied a link to the digital version & page number of the source for ease): https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A_Mongolian_lady_sits_for_her_portrait_before_a_Chinese_photographer.png

Could someone please replace the image in this article with the correct one? It's really bothering me that this has been accepted. Thanks. Exousies (talk) 04:05, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I will also advocate the replacement using the original rather than a doctored image. However someone has decided to replace the Mongolian lady entirely with the Genghis Khan... A change I entirely do not agree with. This is an article about a peoples, and I feel such articles should reflect that rather than perhaps their most famous member. CosmologicalDefect (talk) 00:05, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To add, the user who made the change has been indefinitely blocked for disruptive editing, so it clearly should be changed back. CosmologicalDefect (talk) 00:13, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've made the change. Remsense 00:31, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Remsense! This saga with the portrait of "Genepil" has been a bit of an obsession of mine since I discovered this article using the image but with the incorrect attribution in 2022. I was a bit dismayed when I saw it had been removed. Cheers. CosmologicalDefect (talk) 08:58, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
CosmologicalDefect, oh goodness, I'm glad I could help! I hope the crop is okay also, I wanted to make sure it was the best profile possible in line with other such images. If you ever have any other bugbears in this vein, don't hesitate to bring it up to me on my talk page or what have you! :) — Remsense 09:00, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The crop looks good and matches the style I see for other photos used on cultural or ethnicity pages. If anyone is curious, they can easily find the uncropped original with the tea saucer by clicking so all is good. CosmologicalDefect (talk) 09:07, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
CosmologicalDefect, Indeed! The CropTool feature Wikimedia has is nifty like that, and it's a gorgeous photo. — Remsense 09:10, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Language

[edit]

While Mongolian was the governing elite's language, the Chinese language was nevertheless used for official reasons during the Yuan Dynasty. The Mongols also used the Uighur script for administrative and official documents. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PhilipGiwa1416 (talkcontribs) 07:11, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
