Additional sources

[edit]

This article needs additional independent sources, it is mostly sourced to a book by Nancy Crow herself. I have found the following sources. I have not got time at the moment to incorporate these in the article. I encourage other editors to do so, and to find other sources.

  • "Nancy Crow". PBS.
  • Wolgamott, L. Kent (5 April 2008). "Nancy Crow is an artist at work". Lincoln Journal Star.
  • "Nancy Crow - Works from 1988-2008". Miller Gallery. Carnegie Mellon University.

Quote box

[edit]

I tried a bit of clean up to format the lead a little better and also add some addition sections. The ACC citation I found contains quite a bit of information in addition to the stuff about Crow's academic history which can probably be used at other places throughout the article. The source does not really give a year for her MFA, so that bit of content might need to be tweaked per WP:RSCONTEXT.

I'm a bit concerned about the quote box content, however. It seems to be a bit of WP:UNDUE and WP:BLPSELFPUB in that it's Crow describing herself. It would be better, in my opinion, if it were others discussing/analyzing her style. This could also be due to the way the quote is formated and regular text might be preferable to {{quotebox}}. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:55, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think the quote from Crow is appropriate, and it gives an insight into her work and motivations. It is not unduly self-serving and meets the other tests in WP:BLPSELFPUB. I would omit "I have made more than 300 quilts" which is prosaic and would be better presented in the main text, if we need it. However, the green color of the quote box gives it too much prominence, and probably does not follow the manual of style. We should at least change this to the default color, a light gray. However I think it is better to use the {{quote}} template, which does not put the text in a box. I will make this change. Verbcatcher (talk) 00:01, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Studio Assistants

[edit]

It appears that Nancy Crow employs assistants to help make her quilts. This is not unusual and should not be treated as a criticism: old master painters often used studio assistants to paint the backgrounds and many modern sculptors use assistants for much of the construction work. 'Bittersweet XII' In The American Folk Art Museum was 'Quilted by Velma Brill' and 'Crucifixion' in the Renwick Gallery was 'hand-quilted by Amish Women of Holmes County, Ohio'. Can we establish whether this is her normal practice, and when she started using assistants? It is probably unavoidably in a highly labor-intensive artform. Verbcatcher (talk) 01:37, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It is not unusual for artists (of all genres) or crafts people to employ studio assistants, especially more established artists who are in mid-career or beyond. Netherzone (talk) 13:02, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
