This is a very big topic. Right now I am glad to get something up, but there's a lot that needs to be done. There's been a documentary film on it, and a recent book, by Wright, David, and Zoby, David, Fire on the Beach -- Recovering the Lost Story of Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Lifesavers ISBN 0684873044, which I'm planning on checking out tomorrow and using as a source. Some other sources and things that should be mentioned: The novel Storm Warriors, (famous young adult literature) and http://www.uscg.mil/history/STATIONS/PEA%20ISLAND.html pschemp | talk 06:11, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll look into both of those, I've put the link on the main page. The entire topic of African-Americans in the Coast Guard deserves an article, that would have to be written by somebody other than me. (A real expert is needed for this important topic, which is tied to the former system of racial segregation in the armed forces, particularly in the Navy.) The article on Alex Haley, who was in the Coast Guard for 20 years, gives some idea of the necessary scope. Mtsmallwood (talk) 06:27, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fire on the Beach is another. pschemp | talk 06:41, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
