Standard naming convention?[edit]

HiTagaSanPedroAko. May I know where this "standard naming convention" of naming "city centers", "downtowns" or "CBDs" as what poblacions are can be found? Certainly doesnt say in WP:MOSPHIL. Also, where's the logic in calling them simply as Poblacion in the lede? Can they stand independent of their cities? That would be like calling Downtown Los AngelesorDowntown Dallas as simply: Downtown is a village in Los Angeles. Downtown is a village in Dallas, etc. That's supposed to be part of the names of those places. Its never just Poblacion which could be any poblacion, it's supposed to be Makati Poblacion. Please explain before you start moving even Makati Central Business DistricttoCentral Business District, Makati and start to refer to it as just Central Business District is the main financial district of Makati.--RioHondo (talk) 14:38, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I referred on the Tambayan Philippines Task Force LGU page. It says barangays must be named with this scheme: X, Y, Z (i.e. Barangay name (X), City/municipality (Y), Province (Z)), except in barangays in Metro Manila.--TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 14:46, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That rule only applies to barangays ([Makati] Poblacion is considered a barangay). Central business districts do not fall there, because it is an informal district not designated by the government. So, it will be okay to leave "Makati Central Business District" as is.--TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 14:48, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Umm, its a red link. Poblacion is a generic name for central barangays. This has to be an exception because then Central or Downtown by themselves do not make any sense without their locality which they serve as centers to. Also their formal entries in censuses are as Makati (Pob.)orMuntinlupa (Pob.)' because clearly its so generic to be a useful name in entries.--RioHondo (talk) 14:51, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the red link.
We don't need to make up names like "[City/municipality name] Poblacion" for name of poblacion areas, because they are not even used on addresses (they'll rather write "Poblacion, [City/municipal name] e.g. Poblacion, Makati). The Task force LGU naming applies even to barangays named Poblacion. If Poblacion is the name of the barangay, then we name it with a disambiguator (i.e. the name of the city or municipality where it is found), because that is the rule, and there is an article named "Poblacion" already.--TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 10:39, 10 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, we don't use the names of LGUs here, the way they appear in addresses, as article titles. For example, we use Makati not "Makati City", Lucena, Philippines not "Lucena City, Philippines" or Santiago (Philippine city), not Santiago City, Philippines. We dont even include "Barangay" or "Bgy." in our article titles for our barangays the way people normally would in addresses. The basis has always been WP:COMMONNAME, WP:RECOGNIZABILITY, WP:PRECISION and WP:OFFICIAL, all under the WP:AT guidelines. I would argue that Cityname Poblacion is more commonly used in everyday speech and more recognizable than simply "Poblacion, (add disambiguator here)". Disambiguators are not treated as part of the name and only act to distinguish it from other namesake places. Thing is, for me, the Cityname should always be included in every mention of a poblacion. It's but natural to say Makati Poblacion than simply Poblacion, (add disambiguator here).--RioHondo (talk) 13:49, 10 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Using the common form in speech would be better here than making invented names. I don't know any source that refers the poblacion of Makati as Makati Poblacion, just Poblacion, then Makati.-TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 16:10, 23 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ooh, this thread is still alive? Btw, the PNB branch on JP Rizal Ave. displays "Makati Poblacion" in their signage. Other major banks like BPI name their sole branches in central districts of cities across the country as BPI <city name> Poblacion. There's Rotary Club of Makati Poblacion, Makati Poblacion Heritage Conservation Program, it is common, just NOT official, see WP:OFFICIAL. It's just as common as referring to Bayan in a certain town as Imus Bayan or Biñan Bayan. (Bayan is Tagalog for Poblacion). Anyway, the other consideration also is you don't want Category:Poblacion to have all its entries under P, which is the reason we don't name barangays as Barangay <barangay name>, otherwise, it will be a problem sorting them if they're all under B. :. To me it just makes the most sense. RioHondo (talk) 17:28, 23 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
