Regions not quite what they seem[edit]

At some point we're going to have to deal with this: the various articles usually assume that the modern region is the same as the ancient Roman region. The error — that's what it is — is particularly important in the case of Lazio (not the same as the ancient Latium), Puglia (which should not be called Apulia, see current usage of English speakers who actually go there, travel agents, etc.; and Apulia in Antiquity was significantly different) and, the worst one, Calabria (which in Antiquity referred to a totally different area: to what is now southern Puglia: i.e., to the heel and not the toe).

I've already taken care of Umbria, q.v..

It would properly be best to have an article Regions of Roman Italy, with the 14 Augustan regions, and each of them would have their article, on the same pattern as the modern regions; the evolution of the regions and their names might best be treated in those articles.

Then all the links would have to be checked, much as someone/something these days is going thru [[Roman]] and changing some of them over to ancient Roman. Bill 08:31, 4 June 2005 (UTC)[reply]
