Does this really warrant its own article separate from the one for Valentine's Day? Is it actually a holiday celebrated in its own right rather than just being a sarcastic nickname for Valentine's Day? Has anybody ever actually said "Happy SAD!"? Schizombie 05:56, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well yes, single people do actually get together on this day to celebrate their singleness. The VDay article doesn't say anything about SAD. And '"Happy SAD" Single Awareness Day' does actually give 13,500 results on Google, so yes, people actually say it. My friends and I are also anecdotal evidence for saying it in real life. somehow this came up in my SAD search singlesawareness.com I don't know how to edit so i'm not going to add what it says about the revised date for single's awareness day but it is a notable addition.

Then that's three different dates I've seen. The very original article had the 13th, from what I understand, it's the 14th, and obviously the singlesawareness.com site has their own idea as well. Actually, even the spelling of the "Singles" part has discrepancies. There's "single's," "singles" and "singles'" and the site you mentioned has used both "singles" and "singles'". It's possible the discrepancies exists because it's relatively new (I imagine maybe less than a decade?). Personally I'd say it is the 14th, as people have claimed it is an alternative name for VDay as well (and Vday is certainly not celebrated on the 13th or 15th, although like that SA.com site says, some people may actually celebrate it on a different day to get away from the commercialism). I'd like to note that just because someone registered a domain for a holiday, does not suddenly make them the official spokesperson for a holiday that probably had its origin from more than one person. Instead, what he says there is essentially his opinion of what the date should be. *Most* references I've seen for the date IS actually the 14th. It is often referred to as an *alternative name* for Valentine's Day. Last I checked, Valentine's Day was not on the 15th. Most people I know celebrate it on the 14th, not the 15th. This is the same with the spelling of the S part of Singles Awareness Day. Even that site can't agree to which version to be used, and uses "Single's," "Singles," and "Singles'"

Heck, the site even says this: "One of the most preferred activities among singles is getting together with friends for dinner and a movie. Why not schedule something like this for February 14 too? This article says nothing about when this "holiday" came into existence. It seems like an excuse for Valentine's Day haters to make up an internet meme. I wouldn't mind this entry if it cited information about its origin. Otherwise, I would consider this a neologism. --shiosai

The original page was called Singles Awareness Day, then it was moved to Singles Awareness by someone to include some stuff on East Asian versions of the celebration. As the origins of celebrations are different, and it seemed that English was not the person's first language, they probably did not realize that by doing so, it removed an important piece of the phrase's history/meaning, in that "Singles Awareness Day" reduces to the acronym "SAD," an intentionally ironic point which was also mentioned in the article.

I have already restructured the page so that it fits both celebrations. Aside from this, there is also the consideration that the new additions probably do not even belong on this page, but should actually have their own entries (and in fact, one of the additions about the Korean version, "Unit Solo" is already discussed on Black Day, which is also linked on the page).

Lovers-go-die club is not against all couples, but only the unmoral/materialistc lovers. there's some misleading points in this article. beside, this club contribute a lot for Valentines' Day, not only for the single people, but also the lovers. Therefore, I will add more information about the club and their anti-consumerism spirit.

I don't know why the Lovers-go-die Club is introduced under the Single Awareness Day. As the club organizes activities on 14th Feb. So I think there's some mistakes.

I think there is some problem in the grouping between Lovers-Go-Die Club and this 'Single Awareness Day. Actually, Lovers-Go-Die Club, (Chinese: 去死去死團) is pretty much a more popular name for this "single phenomenon." In Taiwan, there are lots of people who claim themselves to be a member of the Lovers-Go-Die Club rather than a particitioner of this 'Single Awareness Day.' Besides, the Single Awareness Day is only an event organized by the member of the Lovers-Go-Die Club, so the topic Single Awareness Day should be put under the big topic of Lovers-Go-Die Club instead of having Lovers-Go-Die Club be a sub-topic of the Single Awareness Day. 76.126.188.243 (talk) 07:26, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Singles Awarness Day is *only* an event organized by the Lovers-Go-Die club? Really? I think a better idea is to split them into two separate articles. I know I'd heard of SAD but not Lovers-Go-Die Club, and so since it seems it was the other way around for you, it's reasonable to assume that they're different enough to warrant two separate articles. This is going to be a blatent self-promotion, but I'm fairly certain I created this holiday/meme back on 14 February 1998 while a student at St. Cloud State University. The sad (pun intended) part is, I just realized this is a popular idea today, when I saw it mentioned on another Web site. After researching this some, there's consistency across the Web that no one really knows where or when this idea originated, which motivated me to create a new Wiki account and post this talking point. While at SCSU, I sent an email to my friends with this fake promotion. Yes, I was single at the time. Unfortunately, I sent that email before I started archiving my emails, and while I haven't checked, I'm pretty certain the university doesn't have it either (although I'm going to check next week), so I have no way to prove that such an email ever existed. I do, however, have the body of said email archived in another file of mine, as follows:

Today, many couples are celebrating Valentine's Day. But what most people don't know is that February 14th is also recognized for another calendar event for everyone else: Singles Awareness Day. While Singles Awareness Day doesn't have any official celebratory routine, because it also corresponds with Valentine's Day it's easy for singles to be reminded that today is indeed S.A.D., and this constant reminder allows singles to feel S.A.D. all day. You may spot an individual who's walking around in sort of a daze, perhaps shying away from others. In such a case, I'm sure you will be reminded of such individuals and think to yourself, "Man, it's S.A.D." Unfortunately, Singles Awareness Day doesn't really have any sort of appropriate greeting, as Happy or Merry S.A.D. just doesn't sound right, meaning most people are not even aware of the other significance, and thus singles have no one else with whom to share today's activities (since, if they did, it's probably not going to be S.A.D. for them).

Just wanted to chime in real quick and say that I love the unchallenged "rumour has it" comment for the origin of this holiday. Knowyourmeme has a better article with actual sources.
