Solidaridad es un municipio del estado mexicanodeQuintana Roo y uno de los más jóvenes en el país al haberse formado el 28 de juliode1993 por decreto del Congreso del Estado durante el gobierno de Mario Villanueva Madrid. Anteriormente su territorio era la zona continental del municipio de Cozumel, el cual quedó delimitado a la actual isla de Cozumel y a algunos pequeños pero ricos polígonos continentales donde actualmente se encuentra un parque ecoturistico (Xel-Ha) y una transnacional, dedicada a la extracción de material petreo (Calica). Geográficamente se ubica entre los 20° 45' y los 19° 46' de latitud norte y los 86° 57' y los 88° 05' de longitud hacia el oeste, con una superficie de 4 245,67 km² de extensión.
De acuerdo con cifras del censo del 2000 el municipio contaba con 63 mil habitantes, pero las cifras fueron cuestionadas desde un principio. A principios del 2005, cálculos de autoridades locales señalaban que el municipio tenía por lo menos 150 mil habitantes, de los cuales hasta 120 mil personas vivirían en Playa del Carmen. La región formó parte de la provincia Ecab durante el imperio maya y fue conquistada en el año de 1526 por el español Francisco de Montejo. Actualmente la mayor parte de su población es inmigrante, principalmente de estados del sureste de México, pero también se calcula, según datos del Instituto Nacional de Migración, que el 12 por ciento de la población es de origen extranjero.
