External link[edit]

I removed a link that doesn't work. I'm repeating it on this page, for anyone that wants to search for this. The link was Isleños of St. Bernard Parish. Lou I 14:23, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Cultural Memory[edit]

My wife's family are from the Isleños community. They have a distinct distrust of city/state officials stemming from the flooding of the parish in the Great flood of 1927. According to family oral history, they promised to re-imburse residents before the intentional breech, but backed away from fulfilling the pledge after the flood - apparently only the well connected were ever compensated. During Hurricane Katrina (August 2005) we got calls from relatives still living in St. Bernard Parish warning us that, "the dynamite is on the levee!"

Yes, that's discussed in some detail in the book "Rising Tide", mentioned in the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 article. -- Infrogmation 19:02, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Population Update[edit]

I've added the new "official guess" from today's Advocate, having done the same for the Baton Rouge page, which I keep a much closer eye on. --Michael K. Smith 19:26, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eastern St. Bernard[edit]

We seem sorely lacking in info and articles on eastern St. Bernard, such as the communities of Reggio, Yscloskey, Shell Beach, Hopedale, and Delacroix, none of which currently have articles. Also, some maps refer to "Alluvial City", which I've never been sure if that were another name for Yscloskey, or a blanket term for the whole Yscloskey/Shell Beach/Hopedale etc area, or what-- info? Also, the former vilage of Proctorville (of which the ruins of Fort Proctor remains)-- should that be a separate article, or part of Shell Beach article? Thoughts, info? -- Infrogmation 18:49, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alluvial City is was planned community by some company or another down there. It's more of a subdivision of some type or another.. (Or was. There's nothing much down there anymore.) Proctor's Landing is (was) the subdivision around Ft. Proctor, I think. I don't think that there's enough material to sustain a full article on each separate community. It's better to combine them in to a large article. (With the exception of St. Malo.) I'll hunt up the article on St. Bernard Place name that was in the Picayune when I can get into Lexis Nexis again. The Army Corps also has some photos of Betsy devistation from Carolyn Park and Bayou Terre-aux-Boeufs that I'll try and remember to scan in. --Kunzite 01:05, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. We should do Martello Castle too. It is (was?) out there somewhere. [1] --Kunzite 01:10, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I live down here. Toca was listed as a ghost town, but I deleted it because the concept of Toca very much exists and people live there. There are signs indicating the Toca Gas Plants and a Toca Water District. It's mainly where the Fanz trailer park is located -- 2600:1700:A751:5510:C510:8BCB:3BD7:62B9 (talk) 02:05, 13 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dynamite[edit]

I question the accuracy of the statement involving dynomiting the levies. This is mostly rumor from what I understand. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mkow88 (talkcontribs) 04:08, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The article makes reference to the levees being dynamited during the 1927 Mississippi River flood, not Katrina. There is no argument that the levees were intentioned breached in 1927. VerruckteDan (talk) 22:48, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for clarifying and thanks for the reference to the statement. I had traveled to Saint Bernard recently for a service trip and during the presentations they implied there was no definitive proof of the 1927 dynamiting. With rumors being presented one way or the other, the corp of engineer's photo and the reference help strengthen the article.Mkow88 (talk) 05:43, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
