Sort?

[edit]

Should probably sort the species into alphabetical order - there doesn't seem to be any sort of order to them at the moment.

Please don't. As with other species' lists, this is in taxonomic order, and adjacent species are each others closest relatives. jimfbleak 06:39, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
That saved me a lot of effort, which would have been wasted. Bit concerned that something is in a carefully decided order, but there is nothing pointing this out. An encyclopaedia that has something ordered should point out it's in order, surely - otherwise what's the point of ordering it (remember Wikipedia is meant for general consumption, not just Wikipedians who already know that information).
p.s. thanks to Jim for reminding me about signing myself by the tilde thing - forgot all about that on the previous post I made on this page. sheridan
That comment makes sense, but to put a reminder on every animal and plant page seems like overkill, especially when there are few species involved. As it happens, for some of the very long lists (the massive ones are parrot, hummingbird and dove), there are taxonomic and alphabetical lists for convenience in finding articles. jimfbleak 06:40, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Smallest species

[edit]

The CRC Handbook of Avian Body Massses, Second Edition (Dunning 2008) has the Lovely Sunbird at 3–5.3 g (mean of ten 4 g), compared to 4–6 g (mean of six 4.8 g) for the Black-bellied Sunbird (assigned to the genus Cinnyris there), credited as the smallest here. Extra noteworthy, since the Lovely Sunbird also appears to be the smallest Passerine according to the book – though there's a single weight of 3.5 g for the Chinese Leaf-warbler (asP. sichuanensis). The Short-tailed Pygmy Tyrant is listed at 4.5–6 g. --Anshelm '77 (talk) 03:12, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
