About your doubt, I’ve heard that the Sugarcubes got their name when Einar Örn said, the new band had to have the most ridiculous or strange name, and that’s how they named it Sykurmolarnir (Icelandic for Sugarcubes) and they even appeared a couple of times with their Icelandic name, until it was ultimately translated in order to pursue for international recognition. I included Robert Christgau's reviews as a counterpoint to the narrative presented, which makes it sound like there was total consensus about the quality of the three records. I'd also like to mention that just because something doesn't do well in America doesn't mean it's not good music. There is often a big taste divide, looking at what 80s music charted well, between the US and UK — let alone Iceland vs. the USA. My opinion, as someone who spent a lot of time listening to their music, is that Life's Too Good is much more accessible than Here Today but I'd rather listen to Here Today now. It took more time to appreciate and worked well as car music. I did not care at all for Stick Around. It felt Americanized and superficial. Every song is comparatively dull when compared with their earlier work. It's not a surprise to me though, that American critics tended to rate it more highly than something more quirky. I think The Sugarcubes lost their soul by switching to an American producer and studio. Critical response to albums is also sometimes heavily dictated by the times. The Cure's Pornography was massively derided by basically ever pro critic, except maybe one. Now, it's considered to be a masterpiece by many. Here Today isn't as good as that record but it's better than Stick Around for sure.
