Call Letters[edit]

It became WSMV on November 4, 1981... The station became WSMV-TV on July 15, 1982.

Does this mean the -TV suffix wasn't added to the WSMV calls until 1982? I know it seems painfully obvious from that excerpt, but many people think a set of call sign with or without the -TV suffix is one and the same, so it'd be nice if someone could clear it up.

- Hinto 14:37, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What this means was that the station was originally WSM-TV. When it was spun off into a separate operation in 1981 and its callsign changed, at first it was merely WSMV, as there was no other station or any type in the US at that time using those exact call letters, and under those circumstances the FCC did not require diffentiation as it does where callsigns are shared (i.e., AM and FM or AM and TV or FM and TV or all three). However, in 1982 the owners decided to make the callsign WSM-TV for clarity's sake. Rlquall 02:05, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Logos[edit]

As another Channel 4, WSM/WSMV's logos have often been similar or identical to those of NBC New York City O&O, WNBC. This may deserve mention. Rlquall 02:13, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NB: Mislabeled previous edit; summary should have read "Added information on new July 2015 logo." Ajblue98 (talk) 02:42, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As of week 1 of July 2015, WSMV has adopted a new logo, dropping the HD and recomposing the peacock to occlude minor portions of the 4, while maintaining the same gradient shading as the previous logo. This is similar but not identical to the 2002–2005 and 2005–2008 logos.

I will not post the new logo myself, as I'm now an employee of the station. However, it is available (on a background, sadly) at wsmv.com

N.B.: Some advertising and minor promotions do and will feature the previous logo they reach their respective ends-of-life.

Ajblue98 (talk) 02:39, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I really don't want to have to be the one to update the logo. Sadly, there's been absolutely no activity on this page in the last thirty-four days. I'll give it another week for someone to weigh in or update the logo and relevant article. I do hope nobody will (a) hold it against me nor (b) consider such an update to be controversial, anyway, since the issue in question is pretty simply demonstrable. Ajblue98 (talk) 06:34, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ajblue98, if you know of a reasonably decent resolution image of the new logo, I'll update the article. All I've seen, however, is the tiny figure on the WSMV website, which just isn't big enough to do anything with. Huntster (t @ c) 19:29, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Huntster, there's a decent version (158 × 150 px) at https://www.networkevents.tv/wp-content/uploads/4NBC_CMYK-2015-158x150.jpg . If absolutely necessary, I can provide an higher quality image. Ajblue98 (talk) 05:36, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ajblue98, I've updated the page with File:WSMV 2015.jpg. I suppose it'll work! Huntster (t @ c) 04:11, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Huntster, Sorry it’s taken a couple days to get back on this, but I noticed the update just after you made it. Thanks! Ajblue98 (talk) 03:58, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sondra Locke[edit]

Another famous station alumna is Tennessee native Sondra Locke, who worked there in the 1960s briefly, but as a production assistant, not in an on-air role. Rlquall 02:14, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Master Control[edit]

Can someone please explain to me how they are going to hub the Master Control out of Atlanta for WSMV?--72.154.244.111 (talk) 19:26, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Significant trimming of Former Staff section[edit]

I just cut everyone out of the alumni section that does not have their own Wikipedia page or have a reference to establish their notability. This is the current consensus procedure, based on discussions at WP:WikiProject Television Stations and at the Village Pump. The rationales are as follows:

  1. Most importantly, per WP:NOT, Wikipedia is "not an indiscriminate collection of information." As that section describes, just because something is true, doesn't necessarily mean the info belongs in Wikipedia.
  2. Secondarily, per WP:V, we cannot include information that is not verifiable and sourced. I'm not certain how it would even be possible to source this information.
  3. Per WP:BLP, we have to be especially careful about including un-sourced info about living persons.

All of the people with their own pages are notable enough to appear on this list. However, if you look at pages about companies in general, you will not find mention of previous employees, except in those cases where the employee was particularly notable. Even then, the information is not presented just as a list of info, but is incorporated into the text itself (for example, when a company's article talks about the policies a previous CEO had, or when they mention the discovery/invention of a former engineer/researcher). Pending Deal with Meredith and Time inc[edit]

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-meredith-time-inc-20171126-story.html

This proposed deal involves Time inc's assets and Meredith's assets coming into one entity. As of November 2017 the Koch Brothers has been named as people involved in the deal. Its a pending deal that affects Meredith owned stations.

http://www.tennessean.com/story/news/2017/11/28/lawsuit-demetria-kalodimos-wsmv-harrassment-discrimination-nashville/902828001/

Dennis Ferrier, Jennifer Johnson and Nancy Van Camp alleges that they were victims of age harassment according to TV spy and the Tennessean. The allegations show that Meredith management humiliated them prior to leaving the station. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.86.14.54 (talk) 20:44, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
