Ancient Manuscripts

[edit]

"In 1911, she found at the National Library of Spain an unfinished text dating from 1559 tracing the history of the conquest of Mexico, which she published for the use of researchers."

This does not have a citation. I found this on Google Scholar. It looks plausible, but I cannot find an actual copy of the presentation to confirm this, still less a copy of the manuscript itself.

Nuttall, Z. (1913). Certain manuscripts relating to the history of Mexico and the missing text of the Magliabecchi manuscript in the National Galery, Madrid. In Eighteenth International Congress of Americanists Held at London, 1912, Proceedings (pp. 449-454).

Anyone have any clues where full-text sources can be found? The only links to a Magliabecchi manuscript I can find relate to one in Florence, not in Madrid. Thanks Kognos (talk) 12:15, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Getting warmer. In Saville, Marshall H. (1918). "The Discovery of Yucatan in 1517 by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba". Geographical Review. 6 (5): 436–448. there is this footnote: "The fact that Francisco Cervantes de Salazar had written a history of New Spain was known, but the whereabouts of the manuscript, if indeed it had been preserved, was unknown until the end of 1911, when it was seen by Mrs. Zelia Nuttall in the Biblioteca Nacional, Madrid. Mrs. Nuttall communicated her discovery to the Congress of Americanists at its session in London in 1912. It was- published under the auspices of the Hispanic Society in a single volume in Madrid, 1914. After the meeting of the London congress the writer mentioned the subject of the finding of the manuscript to Francisco del Paso y Troncoso in Madrid. Sefior Troncoso made the claim to the writer and Professor MacCurdy that he knew of the manuscript and had made a copy of it some time previous to the visit of Mrs. Nuttall to the Biblioteca Nacional. He published a part of the work under the title "Cronica de Nueva Espana escrita por el doctor y maestro Francisco de Salazar," Madrid, 1914, as Volume 1 of "Papeles de Nueva Espafia compilados y publicados por Francisco del Paso y Troncoso." The second volume has not yet been pub- lished so far as the writer is aware. Senor Troncoso died a year and a half ago, and his literary effects have recently been sent to Mexico. There is a possibility that the second volume was printed and not issued." Searching for Crónica de la Nueva España finds this: http://www.cervantesvirtual.com/obra/cronica-de-la-nueva-espana--0/ which is a modern edition, presumably of the same MS. It would be great to find a link to the original 1914 edition! If nothing else comes up I will add this to the notes in the Nuttall entry Kognos (talk) 20:46, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK, this is now sorted. As so often, easy when you know excatly waht to look for! Kognos (talk) 09:56, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
